Oh, I can't even tell you how much I want one of these lovely Sony Readers. The size is finally right (bigger than the PDA; smaller than the Notebook), and if the display works as advertised for text crispness, then I'm almost sold

A friend of mine works for eInk in Cambridge. That's the technology behind the screen on the Sony Reader (you should see the logo on there somewhere), so I got to see the tech ages ago when it premiered in Japan. It's beautiful, no? Just like reading a book. And as long as you don't change the image, it doesn't drain power (at least the screen doesn't). It's amazing technology.
I went web-surfing: an average figure is $350-ish. Not as much as I thought it was going to be. But yeah, I'm totally holding out until it has a stylus and rudimentary note-making capabilities, at least!
I can do without the phone. I have to admit, in my limited experience as I get a phone w/ more "non-phone" features, the call quality goes down. (If anybody has a PDA phone that has crystal-clear reception, let me know.) But I want a reader that has the Palm suite for my calendar, syllabi, lecture notes, expense reports, show schedules (etc.) and GAMES. Hee!

But I completely agree that as is, it's not as appealing as it would be with a PDA/phone and all.
It's still pretty damned nifty, though! I didn't see the price -- was the price there (I'm trying to forecast the price of the next generation ones)?
