[NT] - Revel

[Open to everyone!]

Turn the right way down any street, glance down an unexpected alley, maybe you'll see it out of the corner of your eye. Maybe you'll catch a hint of the music drifting out of the invitingly open wooden doors. There's always something. It wants to be found, this in, this bar, this club, this pub, this restaurant. It has many ( Read more... )

Mike has promised that this place doesn't involve portals (promised!) and so Kara has agreed to go. Tis the season to go to a gazillion parties until your feet want to drop off and your face is going to crack from smiling after all.

She's solo tonight - Harry has been doing the bare minimum socialising required this season, tis the season for rejections to hit even harder than other times, and Ads is home with Daddy screaming about something and making a menace of herself. Kara herself would have probably stayed home, she's not been too social herself either, and since the Norman Osborn disaster (not disaster, miracle, she reminds herself - but she keeps that thought to herself) you can't go out without someone sticking a camera in your face and commenting on how the stress has made you lose weight, gain weight, look pale, resort to cosmetic surgery, get a pimple or just dress totally wrong.

So, even though she looks casual (jeans and a cashmere wrap sweater, red, it is Christmas) the outfit took a ridiculous amount of time to co- ( ... )

Oh, the tests that she flaked on and walked out of. Those tests!

"They went OK."

Technically NOT a lie. It was OK. No one died, right?

"I don't want to bore you with... boringness. Did I tell you I'm taking up tennis? I used to play in High School - I was always really good. I'm going to join one of those comps - it should be fun, right? And when Adhra's old enough I should get her a little tennis coach and she'll be so cute with her racket and little outfit. So cute!"

"We will be. I wonder how old you have to be before you can start tennis lessons? Maybe five or six? Do you think?"

It sounds so long away but look how fast this year has gone.

She takes another drink.

"And I think I liked tennis - I think I did. I can't remember, but it seems like I'd like it."

"And be big enough to get a ball over the net... and I don't think I could hit someone that hard with a tennis ball - I mean, I could if I threw it, but hitting it with enough force would either break the racket or the ball before it hit someone else? I mean, technology, people think it makes you limitless, JP, but it can be a limitation, too. People forget that - then they get reliant and lazy and die the minute they run out of bullets or whatever."

This probably isn't party talk.

"So! What are you doing for Christmas? For New Years? Remember last New Years? We had that holiday together?"

"Oh, I don't know --- "

Non-committal shrug.

"See how it goes, I guess. Harry's been knocked about a bit - Darla and Connor are gone - at best it's been a long year. Christmas, New Years - You and I used to have so much fun... or am I just imagining that? Was it always hard?"

"I don't know what that even means, JP."

She sounds frustrated.

"But, for what it's worth, I'm sorry. I know I'm the one who makes things hard, complicated, whatever. I'm not good for you - I only ever make you feel bad - I just don't bring anything to this whole friendship anymore. I used to be able to but now I don't. Now --- you have better friends who are better to you. And I'm sorry."

Don't worry, Jeepers. Lorna will get the same emotastic speech before the evening is out. But Lorna gets the tears as well. Bonus!

"I'm just jealous,"

She admits.

"It's stupid, but I am. I see how easy things are between you and other people and I'm jealous. But as much as I try I just don't know how to be anyone other than who I am. If I knew how to be Sally or Terry or Sasha or any of those girls, then I would be. You know? I'd love to be like them. I really would. Not that I'm saying they're at all alike - I'm not - they're not - but, you know what I mean?"

She really is jealous of other girls - even girls she likes and admires. She's jealous and she hates admitting it. Jealousy is a very unattractive emotion. VERY UNEVOLVED.

Jeanne-Marie spies Kara and within seconds she is standing in front of her, not a hair out of place nor a crease in her dress.

"Kara! Hi! I'm so glad you came!" She says with a warm and genuine smile, for Kara it's always genuine.

Kara laughs,

"I didn't mean to stay too long, just come and do my duty and exit stage left, but then people kept saying hello and handing me champange and now it's getting late. Which is just as well as I would have hate, hate, hated to have missed you."

She's a little tipsy. This isn't surprising.

"Oh, Jeanne-Marie --- "

Kara adds and leans forward to wrap both arms around her friend.

"I miss you. Move to Gotham and you can play with me everyday and we'll start my charity for unfortunates that helps those girls who are povo and clueless go to prom --- I mean, you and I, we never had proms and I think that's half our problem? Don't you? We needed a prom. Jeanne-Marie - I'm so sad we had no prom!"

Jeanne-Marie grins and returns the embrace, squeezing Kara happily. She's missed her friend a lot lately and the sweetness of Kara's words cause an emotional lump to form in Jeanne-Marie's throat.

"I think we should just throw our own prom, we can get a live band or something and both be crowned Prom Queen!"

"It doesn't work like that!"

She says fiercely.

"We can't throw our own, it would just be a party! And no one would come because no one comes to my parties! And it's not the same. Not. The. Same! All we can do, Jeanne-Marie --- "

And somehow Kara has found herself another drink.

"All we can do is make sure that NO OTHER GIRL SUFFERS LIKE WE DID. All we can do is make sure every girl gets the chance for a magical prom! All we can do is help the ones left behind."

Wow, she's getting very emotional about this.

Another hug. A kiss on the lips. Not romantic, just intimate. There is a difference.

"Move to Gotham and we can... have tea parties and... um... I don't know what else. Stuff."

She knows JM cannot just move to Gotham. But it's a nice fantasy.
