smokey texture tutorial

base

1. make a base from a dark, cloudy image. the brightest parts will become the light gray or whitest parts of your texture.
2. change it to grayscale. or desatuate it.
3. make sure you only have one layer, duplicate that layer and set it to "hard light".
option : duplicate the "hard light" layer a few times to increase contrast. i made three "hard light" layer in this example.
4. copy, merge, and paste a new layer on top. use "gaussian blur" on the layer. set at 10 or more depending on how much blur you want.

ALTERNATE : copy, merge, paste a new layer at the top and set it to "burn" or maybe "dodge". play with the opacity.
