book list for anwyn_elfmaiden :) - and all it may concern

May 06, 2008 17:02

These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of today). As usual, bold what you have read, italicise that you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. Add an asterisk* to those you've read more than once. Underline those on your to-read list.

Finally somebody who doesn't like "The Mists of Avalon" - I already thought I was the only person on Earth ... ;-)

I'm generally not into trashy fantasy that much. I do like HP, vampire novels and some books with faeries, witches etc but not too much of it. The Mists of Avalon has never appealed to me. I am even one of the rare people that have never felt a big fascination with LOTR. (Don't stone me!) I only saw the first movie and never finished the book. Too complex, for me that's not entertaining & relaxing but stressful. I did like The Hobbit though :).

Oh, and Anja didn't like it either ;-).

The Mists of Avalon is not even close to "trashy fantasy". If you've never even tried to read it I would have to remind you of the saying "never judge a book by it's cover". And I wonder what about the cover made you think it would be trashy? A woman on a horse? Anyway, it's beautifully written and engaging and I urge you not to disregard it without at least reading one chapter. :D
I wasn't able to finish the LOTR books either (made almost half way through the third book) but I did enjoy the movies.

I'm sorry if I upset you! I didn't mean just by looking at the cover PIC (and then maybe the German cover pic is different, too). I worked in a bookstore for years and did read what was written on the back cover and reviews and stuff, I think I even did read the beginning of the book (in a bookstore you need to know s little bit about the books to help the customers choose) - and it's just not my cup of tea. I'm generally not much into fantasy books. Maybe the word "trashy" was too much, I just couldn't think of a more appropriate word. I think I should have said *checks online dictionary* epic/bombastic/lengthy (pick one that'll fit^^). I didn't mean to degrade the book.

Oh! Sorry, I didn't mean to sound upset. I just had to defend this book because it's one of my favorites. I'm going to have to goggle the German cover to see if it's different. How funny! I know not everyone likes the same type of books of course so I hope you don't think I was pissed off or anything.
XOXOXO

Nah, only a little bit ;-). Actually I've been thinking about this - why I don't like most fantasy stuff resp. what kind of fantasy I DO like. I think what I'm not into is the bombastic stuff where a very complex world of its own is created (e.g LOTR). I like to read about our world being "visited" by mythic/fantasy creatures, and/or children's books. See, I like HP, I liked The Fairies of New York, I like vampire books... and lots of Astrid Lindgren's stuff is "fantastic" too :).
