LOLMOM: *picks up book* Who was...*sounds out name carefully* Mi-ya-mo-to Mu-sa-shi? :D l33: *is floored* Um...how can I explain this for someone with absolutely no frame of reference whatsoever

Hehe, 'lolarious'! I love that word. It is in itself 'lolarious'. (Hmm, words that *are* their definitions - there must be a technical term for that...)
And that whole 'impromptu history essay' phenomenon is exactly why I can't read historical novels. I make an exception for the Flashman books, but most of the 'learned exposition' stuff is shunted to the end in notes and appendices, because the conceit of it is that it all really happened and George MacDonald Fraser is the editor, not the author... :-)
aslkfja;sldjfa;sdf LJ decided that I am unworthy to see this comment, apparently, so did not e-mail it to me.
"Glissando" sounds like it should be its definition, but I'm not musical so I'm not sure.
I can read historical novels when they're good. ^_- The problem is that, as with any other field of literature, I find myself wading through the Augean Stables in my effort to reach the Holy Grail. (Whee, mixed metaphors ftw!)
Also, Flashman is made of awesome and win. I was sad when Fraser died. (If memory serves, since I haven't re-read it in some time, his The Pyrates was pretty good, too.)
Ah, mixed metaphors are just a cute way to display more than one side of your wisdom - or do I mean trivia? - at the same time. ^_^
Yes, it was sad when GMF died. I haven't kept up with the last one or two Flashman books - I'm sure I shall eventually. I love 'The Pyrates' - it's so silly and so politically incorrect!! For a while I used 'Donna Meliflua Etcetera' as my LJ pseudonym, but nobody 'got' it and some people decided my name was actually 'Donna'... so I swapped back to being boring old M. ;-P
