I loved Robin McKinley's 'Beauty' when I read it, too. In fact, I think I still have it on the shelf upstairs. And her other books. In fact, I think I might just go and dig those out and re-read them. thank you for the reminder.

"Beauty" was her first novel and so I've been reading most of her books since 1978 and have many of them too (I also love "The Blue Sword" and "The Hero and the Crown"). She lost her husband Peter Dickenson in 2015 and hasn't come out with a new book since then. I hope one day there will be new books *fingers crossed*

4000 yeas ago - the wonders of the written word. I still can't get over the fact that you can read stuff written so long ago.

I can't help wondering about all the stories told during most of our existence and are now lost forever as we only started writing about 5000 years ago and even then only a small number of cultures could do it and within them only a small number of people could read and write. As I see it there was nothing else to do but tell stories when people gathered together as they lacked phones, radios, record players, TVs and now computers.
