I think it's time you stop feeling sorry for him. He's a big boy now and has had PLENTY of time to work out his shit, he's just chosen not to. People think emotions are suuuuch a complex thing wah wah, which they are, but as I've probably told you; just because you can't work your own shit out never gives you an excuse to hurt other people.
