OMG, it's a fandom post!

Yeah, I know it's been awhile. In the great tradition of people who are far better primadonnas than I, I responded to a critical review today. (Please try to contain your shock ( Read more... )

I totally understand and agree with you. If the characters are the same at the end of the story as they are at the beginning, what has the writer achieved? Some transformation is necessary for the story to have a satisfying ending, IMO. My version of Snape was quickly veering OOC by the end of my recently completed fic, too, but as you say, that was the point

It's all about plausibility. You can make any change to the characters you want as long as you can successfully make me believe it was a reasonable change.

It's one of the reasons that although I enjoy many ships, I really have trouble getting "into" stories that start with those relationships already in place. What I like about them is being convinced how it could work. Snupin and Harry/Draco are two examples of this.

I totally agree, especially w/ the Snupin fics - getting there is half the fun, and I like reading the *progression* of the relationship (what events could possibly bring them together, how Severus overcomes his hatred/hangups, etc). But for Harry/Draco, I have yet to read a fic that could convince me of that one. *shrug*

As for Transitions (imagine that, me getting back on topic!), I think your reply to the reviewer was very well-said. You explained it clearly and thoroughly, as obviously the reviewer did not understand the concept of the 'transitions' taking place. But even so, I'll bet that's not as bad as the ones who keep asking if A Tragic Circle will have a happy ending. *snort*

Speaking of which, any chance of an update there, or is it on permanent hiatus?

I am calling it "semi-permanent" as I'm still hoping to have a remotivation sometime but am not counting on it. *sigh*

It bugs me too when the reader just doesn't seem to "get it." And your reply is well done.

I'm sorry to hear about "A Tragic Circle" even though I am one of the dunderheads who was hoping to talk you into a happy ending *smirk*. I really like that story and I hope you finish it one day.

Of course, who the hell am I to talk? It's been six months since I updated my WIP and the emails I'm receiving are getting more plaintive.

Oh, if you want a rec, head on over to lupin_snape and check out arionrhod 's "Compulsion" which is awesome. It's totally AU and completely in character. Snape and Lupin are rival figure skaters with Dumbles and McGonagall as their coaches. I am not a huge slash fan, but I love this fic.

Another rec I have is from the same comm by scribbulus_ink called "Tempest Tossed." Snape and Lupin survive an airplane crash and are marooned on an island ala "Lost." Another good one.

Hope you're feeling better...

I love arionrhod's stuff but for some reason when I read the description of the characters being ice skaters that was too much a suspension of disbelief for me :)

Same here - whenever I see a fic posted by arionrhod, my first thought is "YEA!", becuase I love her stuff. Then I saw that summary (gah!), and I just didn't want to even try. I think it would stretch the limits of believability for me. But who knows, if I have the time I may break down and read it anyway. After all, I usually avoid mpreg like the plague, but I finally got suckered in to reading Of Mutual Benefit, just because it was ellid that wrote it. And of course, I'm the same w/ your stuff too.

:-)

I think arionrhod is in a class above me writing-wise, but I do thank you for the compliment :)

I can't stomach mpreg no matter who is writing it (pun intended) :D
