Just wanted to say that that line about making liberal use of the letter "u" made me laugh out loud.

I still have vivid memories of getting in trouble in elementary school for using British spellings.

Pop culture, I reckon. It's one of the things that's really hard to learn - I can look up spellings, geography, all that sort of stuff - but all those references to TV shows, celebrities, cultural reference points that you only know and understand because you've grown up with them is so much harder. When I encounter references I don't understand I can just google them or whatever, but it's much harder when I'm wondering if, say, there's an American expression for really bad excuses along the lines of the wrong type of snow.
