House Update: The Deck

Lately Andrew and I been working on the back yard, which is why it looks like this:

Good luck with the crabgrass. That stuff is evil. I believe you will conquer this evil.

We killed the yard without chemicals, by the way. Just covered the crabgrass up with tarps for several months, then ripped it out. It might have been easier to just torch the whole thing, though...

If you cover it with clear plastic for six weeks in the summer, it's called "solarization" and sterilizes down six to eight inches. It apparently also adds nutrients to the soil, of all things. It works best when the soil is damp, as when you have a neighbor with a leaky sprinkler head who won't believe that's the case... no reason I should know that...
