Yes I am, since I live in KC, KS it was quite affordable flight and hotel wise for me!

And to be honest the largest difference between the two versions of Gene is mostly paint! No more blue eye base, or gray eye shadows, though you have to have the two sculpts side by side to really see the differences. Per Mel the new sculpt is closer to his original sculpts of Gene (I saw those when they were on display at the Toy Museum in KC) and I have to agree there.

Yes I got to meet Mel! He's a really great guy and is more than willing to talk to fans about Gene and what the like and dislike about her and go from there. I have to head back down and see what the schedule is like then I can post a new update.

And I have to post pictures of some of the custom dolls they have here.

Oh, you're so lucky! I'd love to go to a Gene convention!! I just really liked the heart shaped face of the old sculpt. I've only seen pics of the new one, so I haven't been able to properly compare. I know the old sculpt repaints really beautifully. My mom has done a bunch of Gene repaints and I love them! http://www.jeanmasetti.com/gene.html

I don't mind saying goodbye to the blue eye base - though in later years, Mel had changed the eyebrow colors.

I do love the 40s look of the doll - and I especially adore the costumey dolls - like the Edwardian outfit, and the Victorian one. And the Marie Antointte doll, which was more recent! And the hairstyles are always impeccable! :-)

That's so nice thaat you got to meet Mel -I never have, though I've always heard nice things about him!

Have fun and can't wait to hear more!

They have a convention every year they usually annouce the location and cost in April/May and the actual convention is held near the end of Oct early November. This is my first convention and I can say it's well worth the cost and the trip!

You will get meals and at least one doll, one outfit exclusive to the convention. Plus the first dibs at other limited items to buy, including centerpiece dolls. I won't be posting more stuff till I get home but I've taken lots of pictures of the various dolls and outfits already.

Next year I'll get some advance notice to the 2007 convention and I'll post it here in my LJ so save up and maybe we'll meet at the 07 convention!
