Ooooh. Sadly, I've run into this sort of thing a LOT over the years. Only not necessarily about foods.
Sometimes people who are not bothered by a thing cannot understand, deep down, how that thing could possibly be a real problem for someone else. Depth of love does not enter into it. Nor does intelligence. It is a perceptual limitation issue, and can be - as that young man discovered - both painful and infuriating to contend with, especially if the one with the limitation doesn't realize it.
