Without Amy, he would have killed the whale. A creature so very much like him. The very old and very last, who only wanted to help because the children were crying.
The Doctor often said he didn't need anyone. That he was fine on his own, but he knew that was a lie. As another companion once told him, sometimes he just needed someone to stop him.
She was right.
