I absolutely Cara thinking of Kahlan as her mistress and that Cara views the trial in "Broken" as Kahlan breaking her.

I'm a little confused about the second part. Does Cara no longer think of Kahlan as her mistress?

Yeah, at that point Cara's still trying to fit things into her Mord'Sith world view, jamming all the round pegs into square holes.

Sorry the second part confused you. I think the biggest problem is that *Cara* is confused. I added a couple sentences to try and help clear it up. Basically, Cara is thinking of Kahlan as her Mistress, but Kahlan is being deliberately subservient to Cara to (fuck with her mind) let her know there is more than just servant/mistress dynamics to relationships.

I liked Cara putting away Kahlan's dagger, the action could be termed subservient but Cara's follow up does a good job of putting Kahlan in the sister category.

Loved the beginning, I can just picture Cara locking 'em up in the middle of the trail, "Did she...son of a bith!"

You know, I never thought of Cara putting the dagger away as a subservient move. I have the image of her tightening Dahlia's collar and just shoved this into that category without thinking twice about it.

Yeah, I love "Broken" too, for many of the same reasons (although I have to side with Cara, I think the leathers suit her better). Thanks for reviewing!
