The Spring is short this year, and the Summer long, but the traveller is still taken by surprise when Autumn comes. It seems to him that it has only been one long day (maybe two) since the solstice, all time between a blur of dry grass and sun and occasional rainstorms at evening. Certainly he isn't expecting it when he enters a small town only to find himself swept up in a mad conga line winding its way through a carnival. This, he realises belatedly, is a harvest festival, and he is out of place, clothes dusty and plain amid the bright feathers and costume of the locals
