I laughed a little at the term "non-believers". It sounds bad to me. Like, yes, I do not choose to believe in any form of religion, but it's not like I don't believe in anything. I believe in many things. Just not a uniform religion.

But it was the first time that atheists/agnostics have ever been mentioned positively in a political speech. There are lots of religions he didn't mention, too, but this deliberate reference was really nice in otherwise completely religious pageantry, for all that we're supposed to keep Church and State separate.

Ah, I didn't realize this. This is the first year that I've watched the inaugeration ceremony, or really any political speeches, at an age where I could pay attention and understand what was going on. Good on him then.

Someone pointed out that they thought "non-believer" was a better choice of words than "unbeliever" but I'm still amazed we got a shoutout at all!

I too laughed a little at the term non- believer - it implies that there's something to believe (which I'm pretty sure atheists don't think there is...). So it seems to me strange not to use the term atheist...
