Thank you! It's hard not to write things heartbreaking, given the way the season wound up. Neal just got screwed over in such a painful and inevitable way by someone he was so desperate to love.

Terrific fic. My favorite part is Elizabeth knowing exactly what she is asking and asking anyway.

Yeah, I enjoyed exploring that moment, even though I wrote only a hundred or so words for it. I know that around the time the episode aired, some fans thought it was OOC of El to act that way, and while I can see their side of things, personally, watching it, I felt it was more that we hadn't seen Elizabeth in that headspace before. We certainly hadn't seen her so hard with Neal before, so immovable and so unsympathetic, and I thought that was an interesting place to take her character, to have her be the force to be reckoned with, for all that Peter is the one with the badge. I'll be interested to see how they play out Neal and Elizabeth's relationship in early season five, since there's no way they won't have some kind of confrontation over Neal's role in the events that led to Peter's arrest. I'm sure it'll end with some variation of El asking Neal to use his sneaky skills to save the day, but the getting to that point will be interesting, since there's real room for some very major conflict between them.

I agree - I think her state of mind made it believable for her to say that to Neal. I think El is all for Peter and Neal being bffs right up until the point where it's a danger to Peter. But like you said, she is the force to be reckoned with - nobody wants to cross her and with good reason.

These are beautiful, and all together I suddenly realize how much Neal went through this season.

I particularly liked the one with Elizabeth making it clear their love is conditional and Neal realizing he'd so misjudged James.

It was a really multi-leveled complex season of poking Neal's crazy. I mean, previously, we've had seasons that deal with Neal being sneaky/guilty, Neal grieving, and Neal being distrustful of Peter, the FBI and the justice system in general, but this season really dug deep into a very vulnerable part of Neal that only after four years of working with Peter has he just started to talk about. And of course, with that slow opening of trust comes James, to lay waste to everything Neal's built for himself since getting out of prison ( ... )

Well, for Elizabeth I agree that it is consistent with her char. I just think it was a wasted moment in the given circumstances. The writers could have done better. And as for James, you're definitely right. I don't like thinking of Neal as a victim, but it could explain more about him.

A disclosure of knowledge. A disclosure that shook the ground under both Neal and Peter. How will it play out? We're all anxious to find out.
Beautifully written. I felt Neal's heartbreak.
