Oh, this is lovely. Simple and heart-achey. I liked the deeper look at the differences between this world and his old world. Great job! (More eloquent squee if I weren't so exhausted. :P )

Even without re-reading Shift, this is so economically told and so resonant that it works on its own. It's clear what the situation is, even if one doesn't remember the plotty whys and hows.

And of course his envy of dead!Ianto and his symbolic self-burial are just gut-punchers. Wonderful coda.

Oh, wow! I so very much love Shift, and I am just chuffed that the Ianto from through the Rift is still mucking about in your head. I hope we'll get to know him further. The bit about Dylan...how bitter-sweet!

You know, I really like your take here. In Shift, Ianto felt he had nothing to go back to in his world, and it's really interesting how you show that not only did he leave something very valuable and meaningful behind, but that not everything in this world, full of so much that he'd lost is all that great either. And that he is jealous of dead!Ianto....oh, my, you've created such a deliciously screwed up Ianto. I think I love him. Hope this Ianto continues to knock around in your skull to come out in more stories!
