A horse named charlie....

Holy shit but that hurt. After dinner last night I was sitting at the desk in our office watching TV with Kevin and dabbling with stuff on the PC when straight out of the blue I get this intense muscle cramp in my left leg. It spasmed and tensed up all the way from my hip down to my hoof it felt like. I jumped out of the chair after saying a few un ( Read more... )

I used to have random cramps like that every now and then - I think it may have been due to a lack of magnesium in my case. (At the very least, I was told to try taking some supplements, and my starting to do so appears to have correlated with the cramps disappearing.)

Do you regularly get these?

No, these don't happen very often for me. I think for me they are brought on by dehydration and sometimes over doing it or at the very least doing things that are strenuous.

Ah, yeah, dehydration also sounds like a distinct possibility.

The only equine I know called "Charlie" is still looking for that Candy Mountain.

It seems that the term 'charlie horse' is US slang. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charley_horse

Curiously, about 5 years ago I was sitting on an old couch watching tv and had my right leg stretched out at an odd angle- about 45 degrees spread away from being positioned straightforward, which would be about 90 degrees- went after a slight shifting I got a tremendous cramp that seemed to run the length of my leg, though it was worse in the upper thigh. It was terrible, and I could bring myself to walk without a limp for 24 hours. However, by the next day, my leg felt relatively fine (despite still feeling a bit strained from the cramp the day before), which just goes to show you we don't really control our bodies, and if something goes wrong, better to give them a chance to correct it themselves if they can.

Hi. :D

Usually it happens to me after heavy or strenuous work and not being hydrated enough. Sometimes I can feel them coming on and if I move my leg/foot in just the right way I can avoid the worst of the muscle cramps. Hurts like hell though and always takes a few days for the soreness to go away.

'lo.

I walk a whole lot- usually miles a day- so sometimes I get what I call "phantom cramps", usually in my feet or my toes if I stretch them when relaxing. Most people are amazed at how far I walk just on any given day, much less if I'm out to accomplish something. I've been doing it for probably about 12 years now. Some think it isn't even possible for a person to go that far on foot in one day or not get tired, but my body's had quite a while to adapt to the challenge- so for me, it's no big deal. I kind of wish I could run that much, but at least my speed seems to have improved in the past year; I can now do short bursts for a few blocks instead of just several feet.
