Back in the office

I feel like I'm doing research again, which is nice. I don't get to do that as often as I like anymore. There always seems to be a conference on the horizon. I have a lot of fun at conferences, but talks need content and that means research. Trying to squeeze out results between writing abstracts, writing the talks themselves, and actually going ( Read more... )

All excellent suggestions, however that change diet could as much as double my grocery bill here.

I don't think it is a binary decision (nor is that what you are suggesting), cutting back on white rice is not the same as cutting it out. I do like the idea of trying to focus more on vegetables, nuts, etc. I really like vegetables...

Well, I'm in a similar situation in terms of eating a meal and then feeling ill from an empty stomach.

My staple rememdies are: yoghurt, oranges and bananas. All portable, quick, and energy-boosting. And if you read my last pregnancy post, granola bars are a godsend too.

But I disagree with Blue about the bacon. I can't have any at all at the moment, so I think you should eat my share. You can eat his share, too. ;)

Funny I think of granola and yoghurt as being high fat/calorie foods. Perhaps I'm mistaken? I do agree though that they and fruit are convenient energy kicks that I should really try to consider more.

Well, there's high fat/sugar granola and yoghurt, and low fat/sugar of the same.

I find smaller meals throughout the day work great, say five or so. This means that snackage healthy foods work great for breakfast and throughout the day. The other suggestions I see are good ones so I think you are in safe hands.

This has been recommended to me by many people before, particularly vegetarians/vegans. They gave me the argument that because meat/dairy took longer ot digest it left you filling fuller longer. I figured that meant you were getting more calories from them over time but I don't really know.

I don't know if I can get that system to work for my current lifestyle, though I agree it is a good approach for some.

Yeah, it certainly depends on having a lifestyle to sustain that.

In recent living situations, I've have similar bouts of starvation and then overeating, and I find the simplest way to make sure I can eat what is healthy (in terms of content an quantity) when I have time is to keep snacks with me to spreadout the caloric intake through the day. Keeping dried fruit, fresh fruit, nuts and/or granola bars around give me a quick alternative when circumstance has come between me and a meal or when my brain slowing down. I always have a few things in my backpack (including chocolate) because being hungry without food on hand costs too much, either at the ill-stocked vending machines or in concentration time.

Snack foods can seem expensive if you consume them at the rate of the foods you eat at meals, but if you actually keep the intake down to what leaves you feeling not hungry rather than full, the benefits should outweigh the costs.

Again, a very good idea requiring a greater level of preparation than I am generally given credit for. Certainly something I should work towards.

Definitely go with the grazing. The worst thing you can do for your brain is this feast and famine approach. If you keep nibbling on things throughout the day, you'll have the energy you need and probably won't overeat ( ... )

Your early to bed early to rise grazing plan made me giggle, the only way I'll ever be in bed before 11:00 is if I skip school.

What did you mean be easily digestible at night?
