Title: Death
Claim: Vin Tanner (Magnificent 7)
Fandoms: Magnificent 7/Jeremiah
Prompt: 030 - Death (I'm too tired to think of an original title.)
Summary: The Seven experience the 'Big Death.'
Warnings: Lots and lots of major character death. No one will be happy with me, I'm sure.
Table Vin’s in Chris’s jeep the first time he hears about the virus sweeping the nation. A day later there are hundreds infected and the government declares that the outbreak has been contained. Two days later the number of infected reaches into the tens of thousands and the death toll exceeds 20 000.
In less than a week the country’s descended into anarchy and team seven does everything they can to maintain order. Eventually they’re forced to concede defeat, but not before Buck’s fatally wounded in a showdown with a man who doesn’t want to believe that the world’s ending. The man staggers as the remaining six shoot repeatedly until there aren’t any bullets left in their guns. Vin thinks that the man’s expression might just have been relieved. He still doesn’t know the man’s name.
They bury Buck at the edge of Chris’s property, which they’re forced to retreat to when the city becomes too dangerous. Josiah says a prayer and they each recount something of Buck with equal fondness and sorrow. They didn’t reach Nettie and Cassie in time and they haven’t been able to contact Inez. The grief weighs heavily on them but there isn’t much that they can use to distract themselves. There’s no way to get news of the outside world since TV and radio stopped broadcasting shortly after law enforcement and the army lost control of the cities.
Nathan and Rain are the first to fall ill. Nathan doesn’t want any of them to treat him. He thinks the virus, Vin heard people call it the ‘Big Death’ before they left the city, is transmitted by touch. Eventually he’s too weak to protest and the remainder of the seven do what they can to make him comfortable. He and Rain go within moments of each other and they bury them next to Buck, each saying their own quiet words.
It’s not long before Josiah begins showing symptoms and goes to the spare room to lie down. Ezra goes to get a glass of water for him while Vin finds a blanket. JD sits on the porch staring into the distance. He hasn’t spoken since Buck’s death and while they’ve tried to offer some support they’re all overwhelmed. When Chris goes to check on Josiah he finds the room empty and the back door swinging open. It takes them long minutes to saddle up before they can ride out in search of him, but not even Vin can find a trace.
Chris and JD are the next to fall ill. Vin and Ezra tend diligently to the two men in silence. Both Vin and Ezra are grateful in their despair because it means that none of their brothers would have to watch everything they love slowly fade and die. JD’s gone in hours but Chris holds on because he knows that Vin and Ezra, while both survivors, shouldn’t be left alone with their grief. Not even Chris Larabee can glare down death though and it’s not long before they’re digging another grave.
They move through the house like ghosts who haven’t realised the inevitable as they wait. They watch each other intently for the smallest sign and don’t even bother to hide it. They’re long past being modest about their concern. It means that Vin’s at his side immediately when Ezra’s legs buckle beneath him.
Vin sits for hours holding Ezra’s hand and tells himself it isn’t suicide. Finally he goes and digs a final grave and hopes that the exhaustion in his limbs and the ache in his muscles is more than just the natural result of his exertion. Once darkness has crept up on him and the hole in the ground has been filled once more he drops the shovel and goes to saddle Peso. There’s nothing here for him now. Barely two weeks since that first report on the radio and his life’s been shattered irreparably.
It’s years before he hears the word “immunity” applied to him but he's sure it's synonymous with "curse".
