That shuttle's crash reminded me of the cargo ship crash in SG-1's Last Stand (Season 5). Do you remember that one? Jacob Carter and Daniel Jackson were in it at the time and were shot down by Goa'uld death gliders.
Somebody commented somewhere that if SGU really was meant to be "grittier and edgier" as TPTB said, then somebody had to die. I'm so, so sorry though that it was Riley. He was cute and also very clever and I'll miss him. Young having to do the deed was heartbreaking. I loved how he didn't draw a breath himself until it was over.
Young and Rush sure are being put through the grinder. Their journeys are certainly going to be interesting to watch.
Naughty, naughty Nicky Rush. It was indeed ultimately his fault that Riley died. And he was nasty to Dr Park. Still loving him though!
The bridge set is really cool and I'm glad that we'll be seeing lots more of it. Rush sure was wallowing in the discovery of it - that caress of the console was almost sexual!
A week between episodes seems such a long time, and the mid-season hiatus will, I'm sure, be excruciating.
From a dramatic point of view I can understand killing off a character who matters, although it didn't work so well with Beckett in SGA! Perhaps there should be a "Revive Riley" campaign. :)
Remember Riley's joke to Young that he'd ask for Young's gun, but he wouldn't want Young to get the blame (harking back to "Justice")? Anyway, maybe Riley was too weak from loss of blood to do an effective job on himself, and Young didn't want to tip off the others and potentially upset TJ especially by shooting him.
I like (in the sarcastic sense) how Young seems to see Rush as his own tame mad scientist. In "Darkness" when Rush walks into the shuttle with TJ and immediately surmises what's going on, they all appear super-pleased with him like he's some kind of performing monkey.
Poor Rush, he has been knocked around quite a bit. I'd like to have seen a scene where Rush and Telford each reacted to the injuries sustained by their own bodies after they switched back!
Well, I believe that if Rush feels responsible for Riley's death, then there is no shame in accepting that he is responsible. Interestingly, when Young ordered to fire at the Alien ship for the greater good in "Space" he was at fault for doing so. Rush on the other hand seems to gain absolution whatever is the consquences of his deeds because he did it for the greater good

As for Riley's death, I think it would have been emotionally easier for Young simply to hand the gun over to Riley and turn his back. But even Riley knew that that would have got the colonel in trouble. The idea of Young shooting Riley is near to tragicomedy for me. And Riley implicitly asked for death by suffocation. He was not making a demonstration on how much pain he was -- he was ducking his hands behind his back so that he would not put up a fight when suffocating
