Guilty and concious No Worries “Is it true?” asked Ronon, sitting down opposite from Carson. His tray was laden with various foods and Carson almost looked anxiously at it.
“What?”
Ronon gestured with his fork. “What I see. Between you and Sheppard?”
Carson felt particularly bold. “What do you see?”
“All I want to know is if you really care for him. Are you making each other happy?”
Carson almost choked on his orange juice. “Excuse me?”
“Am I supposed to not know?” he asked innocently and curious.
Carson blushed. “Actually… no one is…”
Ronon lowered his head. “I’m sorry if I said too much.”
“No, no. It’s okay… I was only startled when you mentioned it.”
Ronon and Carson ate in silence until Ronon spoke up again. “On Sateda we learned to care for each other, for our team. I care for Sheppard, although not in that way. I just want to be sure that he has something worth fighting for.”
Carson blushed again. “So you don’t… mind?”
“Mind what?”
“That I am a man? Most… seem to mind…”
Ronon bent his head to one side. “Why should I mind? You are making him happy, you are giving him something he can fight for, a reason to return.”
Carson blushed even more. “I like how you put it.”
“I’ve seen the two of you together. He clearly cares for you, although you never show it in public.”
“We can’t, Ronon. There are just so many people around here… who could mind…”
“If you don’t mind we could talk in private.”
Carson nodded, relieved to be able to talk to someone about his relationship.
He and Ronon took a long walk on the outskirts of Atlantis and finally settled on a bench on one of the balconies.
Ronon fumbled a piece of wood out of a pocket and a knife out of his boot.
“Forgive me if I’m being curious, but when did it start?”
Carson sighed. When had it started? “Physically - almost instantly after we came here. That’s… one and a half years ago? Emotionally - we needed time to find that one out…”
Ronon nodded, bent forward, carving something out of the wood.
“That’s a long time…”
“It’s almost all the time we know each other.”
They both fell silent and Carson watched Ronon carving.
“Why do your people disapprove of love?”
Carson looked up from the knife to Ronon’s face. “Why do you think that?”
“Because no one seems to. I see people disappearing together, throwing glances at each other, caring for each other… but no one admits that they love some one. You can’t admit it.”
“But that’s… that’s because it’s not usual for men to love men…”
Ronon looked up. “So your people disapprove of that love.”
Carson lowered his head.
“It’s not like I could hide it any longer anyway…”
Ronon looked at him again and Carson blushed. “How so?”
“Well…” Carson played with the hem of his shirt. “It’s getting a bit cold out here, isn’t it?”
Ronon shrugged. “We can go back in again if you want to.”
He stood up and walked over to the door.
“Ronon, wait!” called Carson, knowing that could be the last possibility to tell someone. “I’m pregnant…”
Ronon turned around and sat down next to Carson again. “With Sheppard’s child…”
Carson nodded slowly, not daring to look at Ronon.
“Does he know?”
Carson’s head shot up. “You don’t mind?”
Ronon shrugged again. “Your weapons might be primitive but your other technology is far beyond everything I’ve ever seen before.”
“I mean…” whispered Carson, “not the way I got pregnant, but the fact that I am…”
Ronon shrugged again. “I don’t know if I would have chosen this way but you have and if it makes you and Sheppard happy I am happy for you.”
Carson lowered his head again. “I’m not so sure if it’s making us happy. I mean… I am afraid and John is, too. I don’t want him to be exposed but… he says that he will stand with me once we have to tell people.”
“And so will I.”
Carson looked up at Ronon. “What do you mean?”
“Sheppard is my leader. It is my duty as his team member to protect him and protect everyone he cares for. On Sateda we all were responsible for each other.”
Carson blinked, realizing that tears formed in his eyes.
“Thank you.”
