Some really, really good thoughts and impressions here. I can totally buy into this, it makes that much sense. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us. It's given me alot to think about.
i really enjoyed your version of his childhood. Totally believable, may even fit the story line they will have. I do agree with your theories on his life. Poor Rodney :( Can't wait to see the episode and see how close you are :)
Thanks! Well, I've already heard some hints, and I know I've not come anywhere close to nailing it as far as Jeannie goes, but the parental meta is still viable.
This is a very interesting and well thought out meta. Now, are the powers that be really going to use David Hewlett's sister as Jeannie? I hope so, I imagine the chemistry between them would be so much better for it, with the whole "don't touch me...I'm not touching you..." attitude that siblings have.
There was discussion in some of the commentaries and such that they were thinking about casting her as his sister. It's recently (but after I posted) been confirmed.
I guess originally, in Hot Zone, McKay was supposed to say that he had a brother, but DH asked if he couldn't change that to a sister, mentioning that he had one who acted and, just on the off chance that they ever got to see her, he'd like that option left open. Everyone was cool with that, so chalk one up to DH's foresight.
Have you been following me around? If the dad was a soldier stationed in Africa on leave in France, and there was no parent/kid resentment or parent death, you'd have basically what happened with me and the sister just younger than me.
Which means it's very realistic and possible. If canon doesn't match this, I'm going to throw a temper tantrum.
The only place I diverge from your analysis is that I don't think Rodney's parents were that young when they had him, because (a) that would mean one or both would probably have not gone to college, which would make his academic career extremely unlikely no matter his brilliance, and (b) they would probably have broken up earlier. I agree that they were probably under 25, but I would put them toward or just at the end of college -- enough to mess up their life plans, but not enough to derail them so much that he couldn't get a good education.
See, my theory is that neither of them did go to college, thus the resentment. A person of his brilliance could get into college regardless of his parents' education. It's not that big a stumbling block.
