LATEST UPDATE: New synopsis added July 2 2008
Episode 5x1 : Search and Rescue
Writer: Martin Gero
Director: Andy Mikita
Guest Stars: Kavan Smith (Major Evan Lorne), Connor Trinneer (Michael), Leela Savasta (Captain Alicia Vega), Mitch Pileggi (Colonel Steven Caldwell), Patrick Sabongui (Kanaan)
Synopsis:
An injured Sheppard is trapped alongside Ronon beneath the rubble of Michael’s collapsed compound. Trapped in another debris pocket, McKay and Lorne realize that a subspace burst has already reached Michael. Light years away, Michael’s flagship Wraith Cruiser hurtles towards the compound. Imprisoned onboard, a pregnant Teyla begs Kanann, the father of her baby, to help save her. Carter leads a rescue mission to the planet. Her team succeeds in digging up McKay and Lorne, but Ronon and a rapidly deteriorating Sheppard are buried far deeper in the rubble. With Michael and his hybrids on their way back to deal with intruders, and the Daedalus already enroute, the question becomes: Who will reach them first?

“We want to address some of the issues that are left unresolved at the end of season four,” says Mallozzi. “In fact, actually, season four ends in a big way. The final shot in particular will leave fans hanging on to that cliff! It’s a huge cliff hanger ending. That was always our plan, and fortunately we got the pick-up, so we’ll be able to continue where we left off at the end of season four and answer those questions.

Joe Mallozzi hints at a new female character: “Regarding Search and Rescue - we’ve changed Taylor’s name to avoid having it confused with “Teyla” in rapidfire conversation. First name Alison. Last name Porter. We’ll see if that sticks.”

Gateworld and Stargate Solutions. The episode follows on from the events of The Kindred and The Last Man and introduces us to a new member of the Atlantis expedition, at this moment it is unclear whether the character of Alison Porter will be recurring.
“Captain Alison Porter, a 28-year-old new addition to Atlantis, speaks with Colonel Carter about her lack of an assignment. When the Stargate activates, the two rush down the stairs to meet Lt. Edison. Edison has rushed back from Michael's compound, where a number of Atlantis personnel are now trapped. He has come for back-up and to secure rescue for his team and the others.
Carter and Porter, joined by Dr. Keller and a contingent, gear up and head to the planet in a cloaked Jumper. They begin searching for their missing people -- including McKay and Lorne, who find themselves trapped together with no way out. But the team is being watched from overhead: Michael is on board a cruiser orbiting the planet, scanning their life signs. When he determines that the Atlantians are there and may still prove useful to his agenda, he launches Wraith Darts to capture them.
The search team falls back to their Jumper to wait for reinforcements, but it's too late to use the Stargate: the Wraith have dialled into the planet, preventing their escape. Now they, like their missing friends, are trapped.”

Stargate solutions goes into more detail noting that Michael has as part of his crew Kanan, the Athosian who fathered Teyla’s child, contradicting spoilers that his character would die in The Kindred part II. Stargate Solutions also divulges that McKay delivers Teyla’s child.

“As I mentioned yesterday, prep is finally underway on episode #1, Search and Rescue. Construction has already started in the VFX stage, and the baby pictures are making the rounds. We’ve pulled the trigger on Porter - who may well be in for yet another name change - casting an actress who had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her part back in season 3’s Tao of Rodney but did a bang-up job and caught our attention. “We should bring that actress back,”I suggested at the time. And now we have.”

Filming continues on the season opener moving from the “sinister confines of the wraith sets” to the Daedalus set. Joe Mallozzi mentioned that almost the entire cast were on set as well as some guest stars such as Mitch Pileggi (see the below image of Mitch and Amanda Tapping). According to Joe Search and Rescue will “continue the tradition of big Atlantis season openers.”

David Hewlett talked about the interaction between McKay and Lorne in Search and Rescue, an episode that finds the two of the trapped together. David Hewlett tells the official MGM site. “Lorne is just the opposite of McKay. Lorne’s this no complaints, do-the-job, sturdy soldier type, versus McKay who makes a meal out of everything. It is quite a fun dynamic, so hopefully they’ll pursue that a bit more.”

Jason Momoa describes his and Joe Flanigan’s experience of filming the season opener as “pretty crazy” adding “…we’re just trapped. Crumbled buildings. Head to toe with ash, mud, blood. It was just pretty intense.”
