It seems to me that Elizabeth is really struggling with being in charge of the expedition. Sgt. Bates seems to have a lot of influence over her in this episode. It is also apparent that Sgt. Bates doesn’t think too much of Major Sheppard.

It seemed to me that they were trying to imply a relationship between Teyla and John or at least that John has some strong personal feelings for Teyla. They also made it clear that Teyla’s loyalty is to Atlantis (or John) not to her “people”.

Rodney and Radek together are great. I think all through the episode Rodney is very brave. He even took a stunner shot to the face. I'm glad it didn't harm his big brain.

I wondered about the Bates Sheppard confrontation. It was very interesting that it was Elizabeth who made Bates responsible for security. There are a bunch of ways to interpret that appointment which I would normally assume would or should have been Sheppard's call.

I actually like Bates and was glad he was proved right in his analysis of the situation (that Teyla was the source of the Wraith's tracking.) I think he was the soldier in Rising who was having lots of trouble with the Wraith mental attack (the mind projections) and he was obviously very loyal to Sumner, who made a special effort to help him shake off the illusions. I can see how Bates would have problems serving under Sheppard ( ... )

I watched Hide and Seek, Thirty Eight Minutes, and Suspicion as a unit last night and I want to watch them again because these early episodes have huge amounts information about the characters but also about the history of the Pegasus Galaxy and especially the Wraith. Like margarks I am fascinated by the Athosians,(see episode challenge) and all the peoples of the Pegasus, and how their societies are warped by Wraith predation, and how the Wraith evolved their own society in response to their need to feed.

In Thirty Eight Minutes the scene where Sheppard and his team returned to the Wraith Hive (one of the great ships) where they were imprisoned and find only an excavated pit; the realization of the scope of the Wraith’s powers both in the size of the ship-hive and its advantage in ‘war-across-time’ is made visually explicit as the team stares down into the huge crater. It creeped me out, considering all the implications of stopping a predator who can take a thousand year siesta and wait out any societies that happen to have brief ( ... )
