Halling closed his eyes, trying not to allow frustration to overtake him. It would not help.

These new people were bewildering.

He knew he should reserve judgment, but they reminded him of half-grown children. They rushed forward without consideration or caution. Worse, they acted as though they truly believed they could not die. They refused to consider the possibility at all, much less distinguish between the horror of death at the hands of the Wraith and the relief of a different fate.

He sighed, feeling old. One child was challenge enough. Should his people accept responsibility for these hundreds more?

The infirmary was comforting, because now he was certain they were a team, and he was home.

Aiden Ford, his smart-ass lieutenant, the man who always asked the right questions, had done the hard duty this trip; he’d stopped John’s life with the defibrillator. Sheppard considered the bitter parallel and the cost it must have exacted upon Aiden.

John had endured his own death-decision three weeks before when he’d stopped his commander’s heart so a wraith queen’s torture could wring nothing more from Sumner’s dying thoughts.

Aiden had saved him then too. All those intelligent questions, if you die rescuing Colonel Sumner who’s going to fly the damn ship? It hurt too much to laugh, so Sheppard just eased into a loopy smile, while he considered the long list of people he was alive to thank…… they had gotten him home against all oddsAiden was Colonel’s Sumner’s chosen man, and John was thankful to a ghost he knew he’d never be rid of, for bequeing him, this extraordinary young soldier.
