Challenge 4: Protect You

I have been a little slack with this community, but I promise to be better from now on! :)

Challenge 4: Protect You
For the forth challenge, I have asked the very talented writer starrylizard to write a short prompt.

(P90 information kindly provided by wildernessguru over at military_beta here).

Rodney could feel his breath coming fast and hard, fear and adrenaline having kicked in with the first ominous buzz of a Wraith dart. His heart thudded painfully in his chest, the metallic taste of nausea brought on by fatigue welling up in the back of his throat. He couldn’t do this much longer.

Heaving one last time, Rodney dragged the limp form of John Sheppard along the ground by his tac vest, sliding him the final few meters into the cave.

He slapped Sheppard across the jaw line. "Come on, Sheppard. Open your eyes. I could really use your input now." No response. "Fine, I’ll get us out of this as usual, but you just better not forget this. Come on, wake up! Please." Rodney gave Sheppard one last shake before he reached to feel for a pulse, relieved to find John’s heart beating steadily.

Resettling his P90, Rodney leant down to grab Sheppard under the armpits and dragged him a little further into the cave, until he rested out of sight of the entrance and up against the rock wall. His back was protesting the unnatural position the whole time he worked, but he thought this was the right thing to do. This way he could protect Sheppard.

He picked up his weapon, knelt in front of Sheppard in the most comfortable position he could manage and aimed toward the cave entrance, waiting, watching. The occasional sound of stunner fire outside in the dark and the steady sound of Sheppard’s breathing kept him company.

Rodney cradled the P90, patting the weapon gently, his breath still unsteady, but he could do this. He recalled Sheppard’s rundown as he taught the civilians to handle a P90.

The Personal Defense Weapon was specifically designed to offer non-combat soldiers such as cooks, vehicle drivers, command staff and others who are not actually front-line fighting personnel a very compact, short length, highly lethal weapon that is more powerful than a Submachine Gun in 'penetrative' capabilities and yet more accurate than virtually any Pistol.

What that means is you should all be able to use this weapon.

Rodney slid back a little, close enough to feel the warmth of Sheppard’s arm through the damp fabric of his t-shirt. Rodney heard a grumble and turned to see Sheppard’s eyes open, his body still mostly unresponsive after the stunner fire he’d taken.

"Great, we get to the nice cave and then you wake up. Could’ve come to while I was breaking my back hauling you up here." Rodney’s diatribe served to both ease his tension and cover up his relief that Sheppard would be okay.

Later he wasn’t sure what had made him spin back around, but he thought it was possibly a widening of John’s eyes as he stared at something beyond Rodney’s shoulder. Whatever it was, the next moment the universe seemed to slow down, his finger pressing down on the trigger, the recoil of the P90 shaking him as the bullets hit home.

So, here's how it works:
+ Read the fic, and then get creative!
+ There is no cut-off date, and you can enter and many times as you like.
+ Your entry can be anything that you like, as long as it's somehow related to the fic. If you write, then you could do a prequel, sequel or different POV inspired by the fic. If you do artwork then you could make a wallpaper or icons or something inspired by the fic. If you're a vidder, you could make a video response to the challenge. If you ... well, I think you get the idea. The only limit is your creativity!

How to respond:
+ Your response should be a new post to the community (it's fine to link to your personal journal if you prefer).
+ Please clearly label any posts of a mature nature.
+ Please use lj-cuts for long posts.
+ In your subject line, please include the challenge number and the art-type of your response (e.g. vid, fiction, icons, wallpaper, doodle).

Above all else, have fun! And please pimp this community to anyone that you think might be interested! Thanks!

Also, you can still response to Challenge 1, Challenge 2 or Challenge 3.

(And if you have something that you'd like us to use for a future challenge, then please comment in this post or email me at wwsd2katie[at]gmail[dot]com)
