This was fantastic - like wandering in a forest, where the trees can be made out, but they are all twisty and turny, and everything changes out of the corner of your eye.
The trouble is that although I've read several of the Dark Tower books, I haven't read them all, and I'm not entirely sure I understood a lot of the ones I did read :) So my canon knowledge was only *almost* helpful, if you know what I mean?
The fic was gorgeous though - it almost makes me want to go back and have another go at the books again...
Wow, thank you so much! One of the best things about The Dark Tower books is that they were very atmospheric and have a definite and definable "feel" to them that I enjoyed very much. I'm glad the story itself was able to get across some of that feel, even to people with no/spotty canon knowledge.
I've been reading The Dark Tower books for half my life, and on the whole, I'm a fan. There are a few things in the whole of the series that I'd have done differently if it had been my series, but none of it was ever enough to make me not read, so I'd say they were worth your time. In the meantime, I'd be happy to field any specific questions that the story might have spurred!
Thanks so much for reading and letting me know you enjoyed the story. I was pretty nervous about it. =D
This was awesome and exactly the kind of crossover I never knew I wanted but must have. I nearly yelled when I saw the header and again when I realized John was Jake. It's been awhile since I read the whole Dark Tower series but I thought you did a lovely job of crossing the two universes. The John-Jake characterization makes so much sense (his background, the early apartness, love of team, never leaving anyone behind, his essential gunslingerness) . The exchanges between John and Jake and Roland made me go Oh! and I like that the others had their smaller moments together too. Excellent work! I'm excited to see you in SGA and look forward to more.
I thought the John-Jake thing would work, too. Or, I did after I tried to talk myself out of writing it and my brain kept insisting that it made sense, damnit! I wanted to keep it short, so it's a story in which nothing exciting essentially happens (I toyed with the idea of there being Wraith, but honestly couldn't really justify it in this particular piece), but I'm fond of how it turned out anyway.
Thank you so much for reading and letting me know that you enjoyed it. =D
Gorgeous! I only have a passing acquaintance with The Dark Tower, but this is wildly atmospheric and multilayered. I loved your take on the Atlantis team, and the small flashes of John, Teyla, Rodney and Ronon personalities fit perfectly throughout. So glad you're playing in the SGA sandbox! :-)
I'm glad the atmosphere came through for you, even without the background canon for The Dark Tower. The whole series is really atmospheric, and it's one of my favorite things about it.
I'm pretty relieved that the story itself appears to be readable/enjoyable even to people without that background, as well. <3 Thanks, _pi!
I don't really read SGA gen, and I know nothing about the Dark Tower (though it looks like I should!), but when I saw via fiercelydreamed that you were going to be writing in SGA, I got very, very excited, because a long time ago, I read a bunch of your LOTR rps stuff, back when I just lurked (pre-enlightenment :)), and your writing is *killer
( ... )
I'd think of this more as pre-slash than gen, or maybe slash with no smut, anyhow. In my head, Rodney and John are always about three seconds from making out. =D The only reason I didn't make it clear that the two of them were together was that it would've just made the particular story I wanted to tell here clumsier. It wasn't pertinent.
I'm really glad that this worked for you, even without half of the canon.
I'm enjoying exploring SGA, as well, and it's comforting to know I'm not the only new person in it, what with the show in it's 4th season, lol. Thanks for reading, and letting me know your thoughts!
