I liked this, very interesting use of tech & whump. The disorientation of the past/present was good, I liked all the little glimpses of John's history.

I almost didn't read this based on the title though. After that song came out, it seemed like there was a serious overload of Evanescence-inspired fic (and don't get me started on the 1001 vids done to that song). Once I got past the title, this was a great exploration of John-without-Atlantis, stuck in that rank & file atmosphere of both SGC & Earth.

I hope you commit more flash-fics in the future. *g*

Sorry about the title, it was the third picked out as I figured the first two would have already been used for the challenge. And thank you for chancing the story anyway. I doubt I'll ever really be 'flash', but I'm definitely going to try to get back on a regular schedule of writing, and having deadlines actually does help motivate me so I do expect to play here more often, especially after receiving encouragment like yours. It is very appreciated.

I so loved this! The tech was very cool, but I loved seeing the way that the Atlantis crew pulled together for one of their own, with Simpson calling Rodney and them going to the Daedelus instead of the infirmary. And I love love loved the bit at the end with Rodney trying to figure out where they could go and discounting Nevada because John wouldn't be able to fly or go through the Stargate. And then Atlantis as home. *loves*

Thank you. Given that there was never the opportunity to walk away from one another in Atlantis, I really do think they would all feel very protective of one another -- and would be people who wouldn't just ignore things or be afraid to step up. Landry and the others probably wouldn't have been as awful as I like to think of them being during that time, but if you can't have the Wraith or the Genii or Replicators in the story, you have to find your conflict elsewhere ;)

Ooh, that's a very cool description of something I didn't realize I was doing. Thank you!

I'm perfectly happy without the "flash" since I love longer stories. This one is fantastic! I certainly was confused at first, but then had the light-bulb moment when I realized John was just as confused. When I realized what was happening, I liked the story even better, because Rodney was there and John knew Rodney would fix everything.

Great h/c, with Rodney (and all the Atlanteans) so protective of John. I liked the little touches that showed how, even through nausea and headache, John still knew to be careful not to give anything away. And I chuckled a lot at John not worrying about looking weak in front of Keller, because he'd never have to see her again. LOL

I love Return stories because we see our heroes just kicked to the curb by the SGC, but I can be happy knowing it will all work out in the long run. You did a great job showing their displacement and John's feeling of dispair.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am also facinated by the time between Return 1 & 2 and just how shitty we were shown on the show that the SGC had been acting. (But then, I only started watching SG1 once I was really into Atlantis, so it feeds my us vs. them kink and probably isn't really fair ;) I do also like writing past stories with all the knowledge we have of the future (like Keller), because if offers an easy laugh or angst moment, and a connection between reader and writer to share the 'in-joke' that is sometimes the only connection you can have -- except for lovely feedback like yours. Thanks again for reading and letting me know.

I watched (and loved!) SG-1 since the beginning and I still think the SGA folks were treated shabbily by the SGC. I think the attitude goes along with the theory that many of them were considered misfits and expendable.

Also, I lay much of the blame at Landry's feet. I've never really been able to warm up to him on either show. I hope General Hammond would have treated the SGA-ers better. O'Neill generally treats them pretty well--but he's become very distanced since he's gone to DC. I enjoy fics where we see that O'Neill is doing the best he can for Sheppard, but has to work behind-the-scenes.

Yeah, I'm with you about Landry. He has always come off too much Big Air Force to me, with not really having any clue what it means to be a part of the SGC. Hammond was the proper blend, a good commander, but also someone who never forgot individuals were involved. O'Neill was pretty much the other end of the spectrum from Landry, as someone who was too fixed on the individuals (and wanting to be involved himself), and forgetting about the big picture and the rest of Earth. (I put Elizabeth between Hammond and O'Neill, and Carter between Landry and Hammond with regard to their command on Atlantis.)
