Signs of Rapture, Called Apocalypse (Amnesty 2007, Secret Superpowers)

Jan 01, 2008 13:56

Rodney thinks he’s done a pretty admirable job of keeping himself together, but he very nearly loses it when Elizabeth opens the safe in her office and takes out a manila envelope with Carson’s clear, matter-of-fact handwriting: IN THE EVENT OF MY DEATH.  The envelope contains a seven-page will, a flash drive, two sealed envelopes, and the ( Read more... )

That's one solution...and actually, would probably be more successful than the one I introduce later in the story. Glad you liked it!

Very cool idea. I hope they're not going to overreact and do something silly like send John to Earth or cut the connection somehow.

Of course they are! But Rodney will be around to say "I told you so" and possibly save the day. Thanks for commenting!

...hmm. So Atlantis bonds with someone like Sheppard for... protection? To force them to act to save it without stopping to think/hesitating? Or it could be a completely unintentional side-effect... although I doubt that.

Elizabeth distributing Carson's possessions was touching, and you suckered me into crying at the 'nursing staff' line. After that, though, I was too intrigued by the notebooks to keep tearing up, and it was a very interesting read!

Oh, and Signs Taken for Wonders makes a lot more sense after reading this, but that could just be me. ^^ Well done!

[The nursing staff jointly receives a sealed envelope containing Carson’s mother’s top-secret shortbread and fudge recipes and all the associated bargaining power that comes with having the exclusive concession.]

I'm thinking that it's kind of a side-effect mutation that, like most evolutionary mutations, persisted because it's so useful: Atlantis is kind of a sentient but sessile organism that needs Ancient-gene people to stay and protect it, and Ancient-gene people need the efficiency that comes from being able to mentally fly jumpers and open doors. (Ok, maybe not so much that last one). As for Signs Taken for Wonders, I didn't mean for it to be as obscure as some people found it, but I did want the genetic connection to be a little dubious. People who believe in the symbiosis (like Rodney or some folks who read SORA before STAW) would find certain events really meaningful. But if you don't know about the connection, or don't believe it really exists (like Dr. F. or Elizabeth), then a fire in xenobotany is just a fire in xenobotany. Is there a genetic connection, or do we just see one because we're looking for it? RE Carson: I never wrote a post-Sunday story, so now seemed the time. And I just liked that (unlike Rodney) he would ( ... )
