Summary: The Wraith aren't the only monsters lurking in the Pegasus Galaxy.

Teyla’s faintly surprised when the creature bursts from the vegetation and bowls her over as though she weren’t even there.

It has the appearance of the monsters from her people’s tales known as a homa-lu, with the head of a beast and the body of a man, who would serve as a warning to children not to venture into the woods at night in the long absence of the Wraith. Who would inflict its curse upon the unwary or else leave nothing behind that even a Wraith would want.

Something in John’s eyes makes her think that somehow, he recognises it too.

He doesn’t miss a beat, either, opening fire on the creature as soon as it’s clear of Teyla, so she stays down on the ground until he stops.

“How do you know it is not a friend?” she asks when she pulls herself up again.

“I know,” he says, firing again when it starts to come back, and she swears she hears him mutter something about silver bullets. She wonders how they could be any different to the ones he is using now when they are not stopping it, and she reaches for her own weapon as it heads for John. It’s then that she notices it is several feet away where she dropped it when the creature knocked her down, and she dives for it as the creature leaps at John, all snarling teeth and claws.

John doesn’t panic though, and drops his P-90 the second the homa-lu launches itself into the air. Instead he remains impassive, keeping his eyes on it while he pulls a knife from somewhere, one that to Teyla’s eyes doesn’t look like John has obtained through the Earth military. He stands his ground, bringing the silvery blade up as it lands on him, its heavy weight taking him down to the ground with it.

When neither moves she starts to fear for John, and cautiously aiming her weapon, creeps forward. She feels nothing but relief when she hears John groan, and start to shift the creature from on top of him. She steps forward to help, rolling the creature away and aiding John to his feet. The knife is protruding from the chest of the beast, and she can’t quite understand how that managed to stop it when bullets were doing nothing, and the entry points are quite visible.

John reaches down to pull the bloody weapon from its chest just as Ronon comes charging, gun out, into the clearing followed a little way behind by a moaning and huffing Rodney.

“You know, it wouldn’t hurt for you to slow down just a little and - what the hell?” Rodney’s eyes caught on the spectacle of John wiping his knife on the dark fur of the homa-lu.

“Werewolf.” John says, matter-of-factly, replacing the now bright knife in his belt.
