4th July
John couldn't wait to get back to the Pegasus Galaxy, but he had to admit he was glad to still be on Earth for the 4th July. He'd celebrated by taking the team to a carnival (Torren loved the giant bear he'd won for him), having a viewing of the movie Independence Day (the first time he'd watched it after finding out aliens exist... and, you know, with aliens), but the real fun was just about to start.
"Five minutes," he said, throwing himself into the free deckchair in between Teyla and Rodney. A group of them were lounging on the South Pier, having just had a barbeque, and were now settling in with huge bowls of popcorn, ready to watch the fireworks over San Francisco bay.
Teyla smiled, cuddling a sleepy Torren to her chest - he'd wake up once the fireworks started, John was sure about that. Rodney and Jennifer were stretched out on the same lounger, and Ronon and Amelia were sharing a huge beanbag a couple of feet away. There were a lot more people milling around - quite a few people had chosen to spend the day with their families (the Americans, anyway), but most of the personnel still on the base had come to the barbeque.
John helped himself to a handful of popcorn and lay back, crossing his ankles and relaxing into the lounger. This, he thought, was what the 4th July was all about - good food, fireworks, and being with family. He felt a small pang of guilt for declining Dave's invitation to join him for a barbeque at his childhood home, but it felt right to be here with his Atlantis family instead.
Plus they would have a pretty damn good view of the fireworks.
Rodney and Jennifer were gently bickering about the wisdom of celebrating an act of treason with barbeques and fireworks, and Ronon and Amelia were laughing about something that John couldn't quite hear. John smiled a little sadly - he was happy for his two best friends, really he was, but it was times like these - the holidays - that he wished he was as lucky as they were.
Though, sneaking glances at Teyla out of the corner of his eye, he had to admit that it had less to do with luck than with cowardice.
The fireworks started, and John oohed and aahed along with the others, laughing at the look of wonder on little Torren's face, matched almost exactly by his mother's. John kept his smile firmly on his face for the entire display, and kept his arms firmly at his side, ignoring the instinct to reach out and take Teyla's hand.
The holiday would soon be over, and he could go back to completely ignoring his feelings. Until the next holiday, at least.
