Ficathon Format
The level of RL things going on in your mods' lives is unbelievable, and very distracting. We're not going to have the time or the energy this year to run an exchange-based ficathon as we've done in the past. Instead, we'll be collecting prompts for people to claim, like has been done in apocalypse_kree and the "We'll Always Have Pegasus" challenge run on lostcityfound. Think of it as the hybrid mix of a fic battle and a ficathon.
What This Means
On the plus side, we'll be able to branch out into accepting fanart, vids, prompt-themed icons, and other creative works. Ficathons are awesome, but they often end up excluding the people whose talents lie outside the arena of writing.
Official Mod LJ
We've created a mod account for this ficathon, which will be where all "official" communications are going to come from. It makes things easier on us when any mod can go in and edit a post, and it makes keeping track of all official mod communications easier when we've got only one source they're coming from.
The offical mod LJ is rarepairingmods, and the official e-mail address is sgrarepairings@gmail.com.
Stargate: Universe
SGU is supposed to be starting up this fall. Um. We have a cast list. We even have a plot! However, there are no aired episodes, and most of what I know revolves around GateFail. So we're going to wait to see how things shake out, and deal with SGU prompts in 2010.
Allowed Pairings
All femslash, het, and slash groupings are acceptable except for the following:
Stargate: SG-1 - Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill; Daniel Jackson/Vala Mal Doran; Daniel Jackson/Jack O'Neill
Stargate: Atlantis - Teyla Emmagan/John Sheppard; Rodney McKay/John Sheppard; John Sheppard/Elizabeth Weir
We love all the pairings! However, the parings listed here already get plenty of love. None of them have changed this year.
Threesomes/Moresomes?
Awesome! Try not to go crazy, though, so we can list everything in a halfway reasonable order.
But what about excluding common femslash pairings?
Also, before it comes up, as femslash is proportionately a small amount of Stargate fanfic as a whole, we aren't going to exclude any femslash pairings. Not even Sam/Janet, which is probably the most common of the femslash. The numbers of femslash stories don't even come close to gen, het, and slash.
Can I leave prompts for gen fic?
Absolutely. They have to be for uncommon groupings of characters. Which we're sure you all figured out.
Things Which We Do Not Allow
Incest. Please, no Jeannie Miller/Rodney McKay, or Janet Fraiser/Cassie Fraiser. Yes, I know Cassie was adopted. It still squicks us.
RPF/RPS. I'm sorry! No Amanda Tapping/Ben Browder fun times, or stories about how Michael and Lexa went on a ski retreat with Chris Judge and had a grand old time in the sauna.
Adult fiction featuring underage characters. Fic with the theme "Cassie Fraiser and Laura Cadman save the world" is JUST FINE with us. Fic with the theme "Cassie Fraiser and Laura Cadman save the world while getting it on" is NOT COOL. Unless you specifically point out that Cassie is over 18.
There are places for any and all of these things. Those places are not this community. Some of it is personal fannish preferences. Some of it is the mods wanting categorizing made easier.
Things Which We Now Allow, But Formerly Did Not Allow
Crossovers! Matching people up used to take hours, and crossovers would have added hours on end to that. But! We can now allow them!
There's one caveat: You cannot get around the rare pairings rule by requesting crossover actor pairings. For example, Sheppard/Weir is one of the banned pairings. But! Joe Flanigan plays Brendan Dean in Thoughtcrimes. So you could just ask for Brendan Dean/Elizabeth Weir, right? Or Jack O'Neill/Helen Magnus? I mean, those are all rare, aren't they?
Well, they're sort of rare. We still want the focus on rare Stargate pairings, so, alas, we're not allowing Aeryn Sun/Daniel Jackson in this ficathon. But for the love of God, can someone please write the inevitable train wreck of awesome that would be John Crichton/Vala Mal Doran?
What About Genderbending?
Totally allowed! Genderbending is fun and interesting fanfiction. However, all genderbent fics (whether they be about transgendered/genderqueer characters, always-opposite-gender characters, or turned-into-opposite-gender characters) will be categorized by the canonical gender of the characters. Otherwise we may go a little bit cross-eyed when trying to organize prompts.
But What If I Get Offended By Something?
We hope that doesn't happen. We will try to police everything for offensive content. Prompts which your mods consider offensive will not make it through and into the prompt post. Please speak with us if you have concerns.
