There were just three of them. So much for a girly night in, Vala thought. She didn’t get out of the base much and had really hoped for a funny and relaxed evening with some of the women of Stargate Command. Instead, they were three and there was neither fun nor relaxation. Vala didn’t want to blame Elizabeth Weir, but right now it was she who was completely resisting any effort of cheering up. That in turn dragged Sam down and led to no fun for Vala.

“So, any more wine?” Vala offered to the former Atlantis expedition leader. Maybe alcohol would cheer the woman up.

“Yes, please,” came the answer and Elizabeth held out her wine glass for Vala to fill.

So far, every effort of Sam and Vala to do something other than drink and watch the TV had been pretty much shot down by Elizabeth. And as many things as Vala admired in Sam: cheering people up that she didn’t know particularly well was not one of them. And without at least a partially participating audience, Vala was lost as well. She had tried the usual ice-breakers: wine and talk about men. Elizabeth drank the wine and only half-heartedly chimed into the ‘all men are evil bastards’ conversations Vala tried to start.

In the background, explosions filled the TV in Vala’s quarters. Star Wars IV was the movie of the night, chosen by Vala herself. She had been getting a bit sick of some of the pop-culture references being thrown around and Teal’c had mentioned that a lot of them came from this series of movies. And, once again, the Earth humans proved to be odd and she had been told to start with part four. Not that she really got the plot -the mood was starting to bring her down as well. Well, she would have to watch it again sometime.

“I should probably get going now.” Sam said, standing up from her chair. “There are some things in the lab I should check on before McKay breaks them.”

Vala had to admit, she was almost relieved. If Sam left, surely Elizabeth would leave, too, and she could watch some TV and then head to bed. Vala was better company to herself than the other two had turned out to be.

“Yeah, sure. See you then.” Vala smiled at Sam. What a tragic evening.

“Bye,” Elizabeth just said, sipping more of her wine. Vala did a quick calculation in her head and concluded that Elizabeth had had anywhere between four and six glasses of the cheap red wine Vala had sent Daniel to buy. It would be one hell of a morning for the woman.

Sam opened her mouth as if to say something, but then left it at a nod and rather quietly left the room.

Vala already dreamed of going to the mess hall and sneaking into their back rooms for some delightful midnight chocolate ice cream when she realised Elizabeth wasn’t actually leaving. In fact, she was looking at Vala. Intensely looking at her.

Vala looked back.

“I’m drunk,” Elizabeth stated.

“Yeah, I kind of thought so. Might have something to do with the bottle of wine you drank and all.”

Elizabeth took another sip of wine at that. Vala slowly got the impression the other woman was planning on getting really wasted. Had she known that, she would have sent Daniel for something stronger and drank more herself.

“I didn’t have that much,” Elizabeth protested, her cheeks flushing red a bit.

“Actually, you did. I only had two glasses and Sam one.” She grabbed the empty wine bottle on the ground to her right and showed it to Elizabeth, then pointed to the half-empty bottle on the table.

The glass in Elizabeth’s hand was now being emptied. “So?”

Vala raised an eyebrow. ”So? I’m just saying you drank the wine.”

“And what’s wrong with that? Am I not allowed to do that? Do I always have to be the sensible one?” Elizabeth’s tone was a lot harsher than Vala would have thought possible for the woman - not that she’d seen a lot of Elizabeth before.

“Whoa, slow down. Nothing to get upset about. Now, why don’t we get you back to your quarters and you can enjoy your hangover tomorrow?” Vala got up, turning off the TV with the remote while she did so, and took a few steps towards Elizabeth, thinking that the other woman might need a bit of help walking. She really should have paid a bit more attention to the amount of wine being drunk by Elizabeth. Then again, Vala hadn’t known Elizabeth would be this touchy after a few glasses of wine.

Elizabeth, however, did not get up. “I’ve got a better idea,” she said and put the glass down on the floor.

“And that would be what?”

“You have quite the reputation, you know? We could go outside and drive into town, do some…,” she started, but was cut off by Vala.

“You are too drunk to drive, and I want you to sleep off whatever anger and frustration you have going there.”

Elizabeth tilted her head to the side, suddenly looking quite calm again. “You are no fun tonight.”

Vala couldn’t help herself, she had to laugh out loud at that. “Yeah, because you have provided so much entertainment.” She took the last two steps to Elizabeth’s chair and extended her right hand to help Elizabeth get up. “Get up.”

Elizabeth ignored her. “We could still have fun. Let’s do something fun. We could… I don’t know, go somewhere through the Stargate.”

“What?” Vala retracted her hand.

The other woman shrugged. “Just saying…”

“Okay, you are going to your quarters NOW. If I have to carry you there and lock you in.” Vala was quite surprised by herself - when had she started becoming the patron saint of the drunk and lonely? She extended her hand again.

This time, Elizabeth took it and let Vala help her up. She wasn’t at her most stable, though and suddenly lost her balance, grabbed Vala’s shoulder for support and sent them both crashing onto Vala’s bed.

“Urgh,” was the only sound Vala was capable of uttering when Elizabeth’s head knocked hard against hers. While the bed was soft, Elizabeth’s head certainly wasn’t.

“Ouch,” was Elizabeth’s exclamation of choice. She lay half on top of Vala, their heads now beside each other.

“Could we not ever do that again?” Vala said, inwardly checking her body whether anything hurt besides her head. But it was just that and the pain would go away pretty soon. “How are you?”

“I don’t think I want to get up.” Elizabeth shuffled a bit, so that she was a bit more comfortable and closed her eyes. “I kind of want to stay like this.”

Vala laughed. “Instead of knocking me down, you could have just asked to stay here, you know?” She turned her head to look at the other woman. She found that Elizabeth looked pretty cute like that, her eyes closed and face relaxed. Not a lot of her usual tough leader personality showing.

“Promise me I won’t have to get up?” Elizabeth whispered and made Vala chuckle a bit again.

“You should at least move. That doesn’t look too comfortable.” They both still had their lower legs off the bed and were wearing their shoes. “Come on, I’ll help you.”

Vala stood up and helped Elizabeth lie down comfortably on the rather big bed and removed Elizabeth’s shoes before doing the same with hers. Elizabeth did not open her eyes during the process and Vala was rather sure she had fallen asleep. Vala thought about putting on some other clothes, but the bed did look really inviting and it was late, so she just lay down beside Elizabeth, facing her night guest.

Elizabeth definitely looked good when she was relaxed like this. Not so much cute as actually beautiful. Vala extended one hand and put a few hairs out of Elizabeth’s face.

“I’m still awake,” the other woman mumbled and shifted a bit so that she now faced Vala. Her eyes opened.

Vala found she looked sad. And she probably was, after everything that had happened. Losing everything you had worked for so hard like that must be hard. Vala knew about loss, but not that kind.

“You’re pretty.” Elizabeth said.

Vala’s mouth opened, but for a moment there, she did not know what to say.

“Thanks.” It seemed like a good reply.

Elizabeth leaned in a bit, her face now only barely away from Vala’s. They did not touch, but their bodies were very close and Vala could practically feel the heat radiating off the other woman. It was a temptation she had trouble resisting.

But before she could do or say anything, Elizabeth closed the gap between them and placed her lips on Vala’s. The kiss wasn’t like Vala would have expected - had she ever thought of kissing the Atlantis leader, that is - it was strong and forceful, demanding. Elizabeth didn’t just kiss her lips, she caught them and it had an instant effect on Vala. But Vala liked being the one in control too much. Suddenly, she had one hand around Elizabeth’s waist and the other on Elizabeth’s shoulder and pinned Elizabeth to the bed.

The roles reversed and now it was Vala who was kissing Elizabeth, running her right hand down Elizabeth’s side and under her shirt. Elizabeth, likewise, was pulling Vala closer to her, as close as possible.

After what seemed like ages, Vala pulled away. Both women were breathing heavily, their bodies responding to both the lack of oxygen from the kiss and the arousal taking over.

Vala would have liked to take this further. It had been so long since she had taken pleasure in a woman, felt the soft skin, but she could not let it happen. It was tempting, but it wasn’t right. Elizabeth wasn’t someone she could have for one night and then forget.

“What’s wrong?” Elizabeth whispered, looking Vala in the eyes. Vala could feel that she was afraid of rejection. And she did not want to reject Elizabeth - but now was not the time. Not like this.

Vala pushed herself up a bit. “Nothing’s wrong,” she whispered and leaned down to kiss Elizabeth’s lips, only for one moment. “Roll on your side.”

Elizabeth did as she was told, though she did not understand Vala. But she did when Vala lay down behind her as closely as possible and put her arm around Elizabeth’s waist.

Vala kissed the other woman’s neck. “Nothing’s wrong. Just sleep. I will still be here in the morning.”
