Dial the Gate: Uninvited

Feb 13, 2012 12:29

Well, this is it: Uninvited. The very last episode of SG-1 that I've never watched. I can't say I'm looking forward to it much (which may explain why I've dragged it out so long.) No Stargate; Landry; and an attempt at teamy goodness without the entire team. I, er, am not being very open about this, am I?

Okay, I'll try. Even Family Ties had a ( Read more... )

Isn't the point of this to make Landry likable?

I always thought the point was to make it clear that he's the Worst Boss Ever. "And now: duck calls!" Poor Cameron.

Hee! In that case, it definitely served its purpose.

...I need someone to explain why Jack is a friend of his, and recommended him to head the SGC.

As much as the NID got accused of trying to install someone they could control, I see Landry in the same vein. The O'Neill-Hammond camp saw Landry as someone who could be 'guided' toward their vision of the SGC.

As for his friendship with Jack...I got nuthin'

I'm... not sure what you're saying here. That Jack and George installed Landry as their personal puppet? Because if so, they were pretty lousy at pulling the strings. Or did you mean something else?

I thought this was among the worst episodes they ever did.

Yes, I suspect there's a reason why it ended being the very last ep I saw.

(We will not mention that it's been less than a month since I finally managed to watch the entire Emancipation.)

Still -- SG-1 is LOVE. :)

The scene in Emancipation when Sam has on the dress and Daniel seems to be just realizing she's a girl..... Bless his heart, he can be clueless.

Heh, they were all reacting that way. Silly, really. :)

Does this mean we get him back, sort of? Yes, he's back.

Why is Reynolds wearing light-colored boots? Is that normal for camoflauge BDUs? Apparently the marine uniform had the lighter colored boots by this point as the standard uniform. I know, Reynolds isn't a Marine, but SG-3 is a marine team and...look, they moved the cabin from Minnesota to Colorado. What do you want?

I told you the last scene was awesome!!!!

Hee! And there was NO PLACE TO FISH. Talk about alternate universes!

The last scene was indeed awesome. Just like Teal'c and Sam. :)

Thanks for the Marine boot explanation! Poor Reynolds - from Area 51 to dying Ancients to SG-3. But he has two of my favorite moments in the entire series, which may make up for it. ;)

I remember finally deciding I liked Landry when he went head to head with the gluttonous Goa'uld, whose name I've forgotten, since I only watched S9 and S10 once. Or maybe I should say that I stopped disliking everything the writers were doing with him.

FWIW, I did find Emancipation and Spirits far more cringe-inducing even than this. I take some comfort in the indications that the PTB, when they look back, also cringe at those episodes.

I watch few shows, and I've watched Every Single Episode on most of the shows I've followed. Every show has at least a few bad episodes, of course . . . "Years from now, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject."

Yes, he did do a pretty decent job with Gluttonous Goa'uld whose name I don't remember either (although I recognize the actor, who played Nero Wolfe). I think it was the only time I recognized him as generalish.

I know I am part of a very small minority when I say that I absolutely adored Spirits. Culture!fail is par for the course and can be ignored, but the teamy goodness of that ep is sheer glee for me. Also, I found Tonane to be great fun. Utterly laid-back and half-amused at just about everything.

You're right that every show has a few bad eps. Or more than a few! (Hathor, cough cough) But we love the good shows anyway. :)

The teamy goodness is very teamily good, and Tonane is wonderful. It's just a big fat button for me: I was born and raised in the American West (including 10 years in New Mexico and 4 in Utah), and that segment of Culture Fail will be part of my official baggage for my entire life. If I'd been raised in the deep South of the US, black/white RaceFail would be part of my mandatory obstacle course. I've spent too many decades nose-to-nose with the mess to be permitted complacency.

So I get to cringe at Spirits, and the MacGyver episode Trail of Tears, and many another treacly horror, while simultaneously being aware that it could have been worse, and has been much, much worse. (I did get to tackle the subject myself in one of my MacGyver stories, and hold myself to account; so at least I attempt to be consistent.)

And I actually don't mind Hathor, so there you go. We can count it in Stargate's favour that even the worst episodes still had some fine moments! I don't think there are any that I actually find just plain unwatchable ( ... )

::nods:: As you say, culture!fail tolerance depends on your own culture. With your background, I can definitely see the problem.

And as you say, even the worst eps have good moments! Can't speak for SGA, but yay for SG-1 squee. :)
