I have finished packing my duffel bag of things to take back to Montréal. Now I just have to make sure I get up in time to catch the 9am train. I must get down to the station earlier than that, if I am to actually buy a ticket, though.

The best way I've found to deal with lots of pictures (mind you, I've never had to deal with *quite* that many) is to only upload the ones that are worth showing off. I find I often end up with multiple versions of basically the same scene, to make sure I got at least one in focus etc.

The other thing is to reduce the size of the pictures before you upload them; this saves enormous amounts of space and time, but then you have to also back up the originals in some other way. You probably don't need full-resolution pictures with a JPEG quality of 95% for people to look at on the web; sizing them down to 1280x1024 or below and bumping up the JPEG compression knocks off orders of magnitude from the size of each picture. They'll still look more than fine on a monitor.

Of course, if you've already done both of these... well... then it gets hard. You could probably find space to put them on mars, and link to them from your main webserver.

I have just realised that I have 2 GB of photos on my laptop, and no place to put them. My webserver won't be able to handle that many, and I'm sure my pipe isn't big enough to serve them up anyway.

Are you kidding ?

1/ don't server picture in the original size. They are too wide for screens and to big. I usually serve them in 800x600. End up being much smaller
2/ my ADSL line host all my pictures I have online. Not a problem at all. And it use to be on my real slow machine. Unless you post p0rn or you are a really reknowned photographer, you won't get much traffic.
