New hard disk

My laptop's hard disk died last week. It's been going on and off for a while, making these little clicking sounds and stalling on reading. That's always a bad sound, but I was always too busy to deal with it. But you can never leave these things for too long. I suppose those times I dropped the thing weren't very good for it.

You mean you don't have your home directory in CVS? (Of course, I don't, but I only have one machine I use regularly).

Unless you are referring to /etc. In which case, good luck.

Actually, /etc is very easy on a Debian system. Just do almost nothing.

Most of my configuration files are in CVS. But some of them are not, because they vary from machine to machine and the programs that parse them don't have conditionals as part of their configuration syntax.

Things don't seem too bad though. Goodness knows I didn't lose any real data.

Back when I had Debian on my laptop not too long ago, I seem to recall getting all my hardware working was not quite a "do almost nothing" affair. But among other things, X was in the process transitioning up to version 7, and things became very broken indeed in the midst of that.

Video and networking hardware is a tricky thing, because often drivers are not available. But for all supported hardware, I find that Debian-based systems are quite easy.

I just recently put a 160Gb HD in mine. Still haven't fully reconfigured. Ugh, reformatting can be such a chore!

Well, if I hadn't lost the hard drive, I would have just migrated things over. Alas, this was not to be.

However, I do have a fresh installation to play around with.

seal your old hard disk in a bag, and put it in the freezer for 2 hours. get it out, remove any ice. it should then work long enough to recover your settings

I'm not really sure that will work. There are sounds of a loose drive head shaking around inside.

Shouldn't 12:102 be 13:42?
