I love that poster. Glad to see it has made its way across the continent.

You are not going to the right supermarkets. Whole Foods, Andronico's, Berkeley Bowl make any produce sections you have ever seen in any Canadian supermarket look like the average produce section of a 7-11. Also the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market in SF on Saturday.

I'm not really making a fair comparison here...

In Montréal, we have little fruiteries everywhere. They're not really fruit stores, they're more like greengrocers. And you have plenty of misshapen and tasty produce to pick over, as you chat with the shopkeeper.

In Markham, we have Asian supermarkets. These are basically warehouses that are swarmed over daily by Chinese ladies who have to inspect every piece of produce, smell it, knock it, and throw the bad ones on the floor. And they totally undercut any of their competitors in the produce department, so other people are starting to shop there as well.

There are some nice farmers markets where I live, but they mostly close down in the winter time. You also have to watch out for people who masquerade as farmers.

somehow, i find it sad that yuppie canadians can't get prosciutto in the dead of winter. then again, we live in the midwest. i can rattle off a list of stuff we can't get. like galangal. or maybe we have to drive to chicago for that too.

Oh, we can get prosciutto in the winter. :) But no reasonable fruit.

Sacrifices must be made, if one is to live so far north.
