vampires and locations they are associated with

What's the deal with New Orleans and vampires? Is that just something Anne Rice came up with? And Transylvania, I guess that was just Bram Stoker and Vlad Tepes? What are some other hot spot vampire locations?

I don't know about New Orleans, but the word 'vampire' is a loanword from the Serbian language, and according to wikipedia it spread in the 18th century via German language texts. Serbia is very close to Transylvania and I'm fairly sure that Transylvania was home to a contingent of German speaking people at the time. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think that the word was introduced to Europe at large by German speaking Transylvanians and that this could have helped the word, at least, to be associated with that region.
