History Battle Announcement & FAQ

Feb 06, 2011 14:43

In honor of hitting a 100 watchers and to keep up from going stir fry crazy this month without Sanctuary, we're going to start out with a history battle for the month of February. We'll try something else next month! Prompt posting for the battle will start tomorrow hopefully.

What is a history battle?
A history battle is several days of creation in all forms - fanfic, art, icons, vids - based on fan-submitted prompts, and the posting of those works to a LiveJournal community for all to enjoy. It is a battle where EVERYONE WINS.

How do I participate?
Join this community. Submit prompts, write a fic, make a vid, draw a scene, create icons or any combination of the five. Feel free to lurk, too; just be sure to leave feedback.

Schedule?
Tentative dates: First battle --> Prompting: Monday Feb 7 to Monday Feb 14 2011. Sharing of creations: Tuesday Feb 15 to Feb 28 2011.

How does prompt posting work?
You'll see a post calling for prompts (be sure to watch and join the comm). That post will include instructions on how to format your prompts. You'll comment to that post, and only that post, with your properly formatted prompts. Piece of cake!

How does fic/vid/art posting work?
You'll see a post announcing that the battle is open. You'll comment to that post and only that post, using for your subject the title of your creation and the prompt that inspired it.

For fic - Post the text of your story in the comment. Your fic should be in English (a few sentences in another language are fine).
For art /icons- Post your art directly in the comment using an img tag. If your art is larger than 800 px wide or 500 kB, please instead comment with a thumbnail (smaller image) that links to a full version of the art. Permanent links are preferable.
For vids - Please post a link to your video in the comment, or to a place where your video can be uploaded. Permanent links are preferable.

What can I post?
Any character, any pairing, any threesome, any moresome, any historical figure. Anything that falls under the heading of history, legend, myth, literature, folkore, and facts. Please refer to the community guidelines for examples of subjects allowed in this comm. If you're not sure, drop me a comment and ask.

Any rating is acceptable - please note your ratings in the subject line. Porn is allowed as long as it has enough to do with the purpose of this comm (James and Oscar Wilde getting it on, Helen's secret past as a burlesque dancer, IDK whatever.) Just please note that porn is not required or even necessarily encouraged - but that avenue is open to you if you choose. That said, gen, friendship and mild het/slash are awesome too!

What can't I post?
Here's the deal with RPF - if the fic/art/vid isn't sexual, then living historical/notable figures are fine. Otherwise, only dead people are allowed.

For those of you dabbling in porn, the following is not allowed: anything non-consensual (non-con & dub-con), anything with incest (i.e forbidden pairings are Ashley/Helen, Helen/Gregory, Ashley/John, Ashley/Gregory, Kate and her brother, the two brothers from Edward, and threesome/moresome that would include those pairings --> in short, anything between siblings and/or parents/grandparents with children/grandchildren) and anything with underaged participants.

No OCs.

I will not include prompts and will delete fics/art/vids that I do not feel are in line with the stated purpose of this community or break the above mentioned rules.

May I post as many prompts or prompt responses as I like?
Yes! More is better. ;)

May I submit prompts even if I'm not creating?
Yes! And you may create and post your prompt responses even if you didn't submit any prompts.

How historical/factual/etc do I have to get?
Was there any research/outside knowledge involved? Then it should be fine.

How long can my stories be?
The limit on stories is 4300 characters, which is very roughly 850 words. This restriction exists just so that your stories can make it into the LJ comment box.

What if I absolutely cannot shave my story down to that limit?
Comment with a preview, and include a link to the rest.

Do I need to warn for spoilers?
No, but you may do so if you wish if you use elements from an episode that aired recently. As controversial as this may be, if you're fannish enough to be participating, you've got to be fannish enough to watch the show pretty soon after it airs, right? And if you haven't, hustle over to fastpasstv.com and get up to date!

What is porn? Do I need to warn for porn?
Porn is smut, anything sexual. Mild romantic stuff at a PG-13 rating or under doesn't qualify as porn for the purpose of this battle. Anything at PG-13, R or NC-17 with sexual content does. Please include a rating in your subject line if you are writing porn. People, if you don't want to read porn, make sure to check the rating!

May I post poetry / sheet music / dance steps / recipes?
Go ahead and post your art in whatever form it takes, as long as it involves Sanctuary and follows all of our other rules.

May I submit prompts that cross over with other fandoms?
I'm going to indulge myself here. The answer is generally no unless the other show features a historical figure (for example, you could crossover into Warehouse 13 due to HG Wells and Nikola Tesla being featured/mentioned on the show but again, your creation must keep to the community guidelines, etc.)

If someone else has already responded to a prompt I like, can I post my own response to the same prompt?
Of course!

May I post an older work if it fits one of the prompts?
Nope, sorry. Battles are meant to encourage new work! Because new work is fabulous and shiny!

I did some research for my fic/art, can I post that to the comm too?
Yes! Don't post it in the battle post as a comment though, make a brand new post to the comm. We'd love to see your research!

May I post responses anonymously?
Yes, but you are required to include some sort of nom de plume, and your email address, along with your creation.

Do I need to be a member of the comm to participate?
Nope! We welcome everyone!

What if someone posts something I find completely wrong/objectionable/perverse?
Does it break any of the rules? If not, sorry, just don't read it. If it does, let me know and I'll take a look.

What if I have a question this post haven't answered yet?
Comment below and ask. I'll get back to you ASAP.
