Backing out

Isn't it always this way? I was just about to invite folks over for drinks to celebrate stepping down as chair, and I need to meet with the new chair on Friday to do the update. Not Wednesday. Which is a little bit annoying, but I'll be happy to step down after that. So maybe Friday night instead ( Read more... )

"It is the fine extrication of each finger and toe from a web of responsibility and connection."

Thanks for sharing, and beautifully articulated. Sounds like you're going to have to be in charge of guiding the process of *not* being in charge. Wishing you luck. Is there any part of you that expects there to be some sadness mingled in with the eventual relief when you step down?

Definitely. I think that is part of what I am feeling as well. This job helped me make the transition back into the college after the mess with my promotion (which turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me). It was a lot of work, but most of it I really loved. There was just no compensation.

I would do it again if there was more compensation.

No compensation? Maybe I just don't understand the world of academia (and if this is normal or not) but that seems nuts. I mean, paying a good leader to keep things running smoothly generally saves time and money in the end. Well boo to that, but yay to whatever new and interesting adventure comes your way.

No, in academia, you only get paid if you know someone, or enough of you get together and refuse to do the job until they pay you.

I often say we get paid in prestige. But you can't buy a cup of joe with prestige.

Thanks, Shimmer. I've just spend the morning sending e-mails letting everyone know that I am stepping down on Wednesday. I still have the meetings on Friday, but it is pretty much over.

So interesting to do this consciously.

Right now I just type into word and have the people at Carnegie Mellon put them into the database format.

Ah, the joys of not being a graduate student anymore! Because originally it was all in UNIX. I could still do it in UNIX. But now there are graduate students to do that ;D.

We had transcripts and coding screens. UNIX is really useful. But there are better things out there now. I realize I don't even know which platform TalkBank uses!
