I know it's been a few months since I've posted, but laziness tends to trump everything else where I'm concerned. As always, please find it in your lovely hearts to forgive me! Now, I'd planned to present a multi-fandom entry for my return, but halfway through making my second and latest
20inspirations entry batch, I realized my alternate/variation-loving ass would have more than enough icons for a sizeable post, so it's 100% Andrew Garfield this time. (Another icon dump is coming up before the end of the month, and I promise that'll be multi-fandom!)
The overall theme for this month's challenge was "complex," and I tried my best to rise to the occasion. I feel some of these look too simple and straightforward, but believe me, a lot of work and a big dash of frustration went into making this stuff. Before anyone makes a comment about the text, I'll be dead honest and admit that I used text textures for most of these. I know lots of makers look down on using those things, but I personally feel that if a certain one has an appropriate phrase, it'll look much better on my work than if I typed out the phrase myself after picking out what's probably the wrong font(s), and then scaled it down and rotated it to fit the icon parameters. I'm just not that great at text no matter how often I practice, and I've been practicing since I first began making icons so...pretty much hopeless. Yeah.
I'm very ambitious, but my repertoire of iconizing skills doesn't always allow me to execute stuff in the way I want. For example, I tried to use the Tiles Filter for #17 to replicate the pixelated edges of
this photo, but the result, which is #69, was repeatedly way off the mark even after I kept fooling with the tool settings. I also sucked at using the paint textures provided in the inspiration post. Instead, I ended up cropping parts of the photos provided and manipulated those as textures. Also, there are no awesome blends or blocking effects here because I tried my best, and the results were either laughable or cringeworthy. However, one thing that I actually can say I'm particularly proud of in this batch is that I've finally veered away from all the yellow coloring I was doing. I love yellow icons to death, but I felt my work was so redundant over the last few months because my mind couldn't help but zero in on that one color. With that said, I have to give huge thanks to
daynawashere for the muted coloring tip. Though it's clear that I didn't do such a hot job on actually muting anything (damn you, Vibrance!), I dedicate this post to Dayna because her tip led me to the explosion of blues and purples in my work!
Last, but not least, y'all know that feedback or concrit is always very much welcome! And if there's anyone who just wants to gab endlessly about icons or graphics, that's fine, too, cuz I love talking with you, folks! :)
NOTE: When you snag something, please credit me and the comm, so people will stop friending me when they're merely searching for my graphics. Many thanks!
BONUS: The first person to correctly identify the song and artist/band whose lyrics I use in this post's title and LJ-cut text will get a SHAREABLE ICON REQUEST! (No cartoons or anime though please.) It would be awesome if Google were left out of the equation, but I wouldn't know either way, right? :P Congrats to
blue-emotion for correctly guessing "Battery Kinzie" by the Fleet Foxes!
