Your machine will come with detailed instructions on how to put the thread in, how to use the different feet that come with it, etc., so I wouldn't worry about not knowing how to use it.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for, but I just picked the one with the best Amazon reviews that was within my budget, and it worked pretty well for me. Make sure you read the negative reviews carefully.

My machine is by a German manufacturer which they don't sell in the US, so I can't give you a specific model, but Janome, Brother and Singer all make good machines.

Don't buy a Singer machine, unless it's an older machine. Their quality has nose-dived in the last ten years. Get a Brother sewing machine.
