I'd go with a cream accent for the purple dress, or at least an off-white. I think you shouldn't have much of a petticoat issue with the black dress. Pleats can be misleading, after all.

I think it would be better to sew with a matching thread so that if you make a mistake while sewing, it doesn't show so much. I always try to keep stitches that are around collar and neck area even more tidy, because they are closest to your face and people will notice them a lot more easily than from the bottom of the dress.

You can avoid the difference in waistline if you pin the skirt portion and check it before sewing it together. Also I think you might want to zigzag the pieces before you sew them together. I think it is way easier to do it that way, because while you will sew a lot longer piece there is no bulk and it will keep the fabric from fraying.

I really like the desings. :) I would suggest off-white accents too.

About chiffon, the tips on this page look useful: http://www.coletterie.com/tutorials-tips-tricks/5-tips-for-sewing-delicate-fabrics (It's been a long time since I sewed chiffon myself, so I can't say what I did from personal experience ... I can't remember that far back off the top of my head ( ... )

No problem I also find it useful when people mention patterns used. Thanks for your suggestions, I think I will use binding and maybe a ribbon on the other side to cover the stitches.
