Creating a whole new bodice for my IW JSK. Thoughts?

May 04, 2013 13:29

Hello lolita seamstresses!  I recently purchased an Innocent World Royal Parade JSK second-hand from the comm-sales (new, with tags).  I'm utterly in love with the print of the skirt, however there are some major fit issues.  I'm thinking of creating a new bodice for it from scratch.
Am I crazy? )

If you bought it new directly from IW I'd suggest contacting them for a replacement. They are usually pretty picky about their quality. Since you got it second-hand I think it may be an item from one of their "oddment lucky packs," where they sell off items with some flaws.

Personally, I find altering delicate synthetics to be more trouble than they're worth. When you disassemble the fabric might shred and you'll still be left with little holes in the fabric. You'll have to narrow the middle panel to cover up the holes, and if you use two different types of fabric in the bodice it might look odd.

If you love the print and the bodice fits you poorly, I'd recommend making it into a skirt, or have a completely new bodice. Maybe you could some of the original fabric to accent the new bodice with bows or straps?

Also if you replace the bodice with, say an ivory velveteen for example, you can use any leftover original fabric for accessories as well. As long as the colors are well matched I think it will look ok.

Oh, I like the idea of velveteen, especially with the lighter skirt fabric. Thanks for the idea!

Sure thing! And many velveteens are fairly sturdy so that should help with the reinforcement issue. :) Another idea since that the design on that center panel kind of looks like filigree hook and eye closures that you find at craft stores, is that you could have a few of those running up the center of the bodice where that panel used to be, to sort of allude to the same design that you would be replacing. This is just an idea though and would probably depend on if you can even find the right type of clasps, but it could look really nice. Anyways, your welcome and good luck with the alteration! I hope it turns out!

Altering brand is not sacrilegious at all. Here's a good tutorial on turning a dress into a skirt, if that's your preferred option. Unfortunately it's cached because Nessa took her blog down :(

Personally I wouldn't bother keeping the front panel, I'd go with a plain bodice, maybe something with a bit of texture to it. If you had trouble matching that colour you could go with a warm-toned grey.

Thanks for that link! I'm glad to know that altering brand can be done really well and isn't the end of the world. I'd rather have a dress that actually looks good on me afterall.

The print on the skirt almost looks like pencil drawings, so grey would actually look really cute. I guess it all depends on what my somewhat sad fabric store has available, haha. Thanks for the suggestions!
