I'm self-taught too and I can definitely say you're much better than I was at the same point as you XD
I'm a little older too (just hitting 21 myself) XD.

Definitely post some more stuff when you can, you've got some good potential I think. :)

For a first project for yourself I'd suggest keeping it simple. For both your own sanity (XD) but also then you can make something that is more flexible and usable :) Maybe a jsk?
Just watch your lace and you're good *thumbs up* :D
