Some WIP photos and asking for embellishment advice

Disclaimer: while I have followed instructions to make a bell shaped/rectangle skirt with half elastic waistband and waist ties, I know the fabric is not a lolita fabric. This was a first attempt skirt, and the fabric was on clearance. So it's just a fun project and depending on how well I finish it, I might wear it out and about. I hope despite ( Read more... )

That's so cute! I love non-standard prints and designs. I mean, I have a skirt with comic book covers and characters edged with red pom-poms. Your vegetable skirt is adorable and the radish buttons are <3. And the carrot scarf! Omg! What book is that from? I don't know about the decoration 3/4 of the way down, but definitely put the lace at the bottom; gives it a visual sense of an end.

Twinkie Chan wrote a book called Crochet Goodies for Fashion Foodies. I think it took me about two weeks tops? I was on a crochet bender at that stage. And I'm glad you agree with the lace at the bottom. I had a feeling that would be the right way to go. I can always add more decorations later if I'm not happy.

:-O I know what I'm going to be begging people to make me next! (I can sew and embroidery, but not knit or crochet; thankfully I have friends who are the reverse.)

I just had to say, I'd totally wear a loli skirt/jsk with veggies on it. With all the fruit and sweets, I think veggies are perfect! :D The button is adorable!!! What a perfect touch.

Thanks! I got so lucky, when I couldn't find carrots I didn't think I'd have luck with anything else...

No, she's right with her conversion - it just depends whether you're going parallel to the selvedge or against it.

What she is talking about is cutting two pieces parallel to the selvedge with the fabric width being the size of one panel, in this instance her fabric width is 44" or 110cm, so she cuts two pieces 22" or 55cm long, that gives her two panels that are 110cm X 55cm and a total hem of 220cm. The waistband etc. gets made out of the remainder.

I have massive problems visualising the best and most economical way to cut fabric. It didnt help that this print was indeed directional. I also went to the trouble of lining up the design (because my 'rectangle' is three rectangles, the problem with using a small bolt of quilting fabric haha). But the diagram makes it slightly easier.

It looks like you used more fabric in the front of your skirt than the back, and that you didn't pull the elastic tight enough to fit you.

Yeah I did, because that was the recommendation in the tutorial. But I read the comments on that article, and it sounds like a couple of other girls had similar issues to me. It's fixable for the next project. :)

And to elaborate more, the elastic is only 30cm. The casing is 60cm. So the casing part of the waistband gathered fine. Just not the rest of the skirt.

Your casing is waaay too short for the amount of fabric you wanted in your skirt - you'd need something more like 130cm of casing length (i.e. half your skirt's total hem) OR need to gather the back of the skirt to the casing. The reason it doesn't work is because of the amount of fabric you need for your hem is too big in comparison to the amount of casing/elastic you chose.
