I think you should make completely new straps and try to match them to the older ones as much as possible. Ribbon might be alright physically but it will change the aesthetic of the dress
Thank you! I have tried looking in my local fabric shop to find something suitable, the colour of chiffon is so hard to match though! It's not quite pink not quite peach!
Firstly, It seems to me that adding 8 inches might be a bit much. However, I'd need to know what it looks like when you're actually wearing it to make a better assessment. As for the altering, original straps look ruffled, and I think what I would do is try to keep the same design going - which would mean matching the material and the ruffling. But this is just how I would do it. Anything deviating from that design might look too foreign to me. I hope some other girls weigh in on this though. ^.^
It's a lovely dress! I should love to make one some day. Victorian Maiden is a favorite of mine. :)
I definitely want to try and keep it the same, the design is really beautiful and perfect already x3 I will try put up some pictures of me wearing it so you can see if you think it needs altering! Thanks :D
Ah, very good! I see what you mean about the awkward fitting. I have the same problem a lot of the time and always have to alter the garment somehow.
And my hunch was right. It would look to me that adding maybe 2-3 inches to each strap much do you. If you're doing the ribbon sans the chiffon, adding it to the back side would be what I would do. I guess just adding a little extension to the base of each strap on the back.
Honestly, I'd just forgo the straps altogether. Since the bodice has corset lacing, it may be able to stand up straight on its own. I would put it on and see if it falls down with out the straps.
Another alternative would be to create a sort of halterneck with the straps that are there now. If you add a length of satin ribbon to the back end of them that's similar in color to the ribbon on the bodice, you could probably get away with it.
It might be easier to match the brown ribbon rather than the chiffon. Then it carries the brown further into the outfit as well. But like the other commenter, I'd like to see a pic to assess the fit before I suggest alteration methods :)
First I think 8 inches is a lot, 4 is a lot also, I see the dress is to high for your breast but i think do not low the neckline more than 1 or maybe 2 inches because it losts the lolita line, also if you look at the design of the dress you can see it's designed to be worn with the brown ribbon at the bottom of the breast not below them. I think you put the dress to low in the "after" pictures
