It looks like what's going on with the shape is probably because you didn't gather enough fabric into the skirt's waistband, your petticoat is the wrong shape, or a bit of both.

If I may ask what measurements you used and what your waist measurement is, I may be able to help you further. :)

However, I think that you're on the right track, and the pink gingham with the white ruffle is pretty adorable.

I think the petticoat should be a decent shape, I've seen it work well under other skirts. =/

I didn't think of that with the gathering at the waist band, though. I'd noticed that the waist band was still somewhat loose after I gathered it. I'm a 36 inch waist, and the waist band stretched could fit someone much bigger than that.

How long was the gingham? At a 36 inch waist, you'd need to get a rectangle that's at least three yards long for the skirt to have the right shape.

Also, if your waistband is still loose, you can always take in the elastic some to make it fit tighter.

I can't find the exact length I wrote down right now, but it wasn't three yards. The tutorial I was using somewhat confused me about a proper length of the rectangle. =/

Seconding that the skirt rectangle is definitely too short, I'd have gone with at least 3 yards as well (probably more. Lolita is all about poofy skirts, after all).

About the waist band being too loose, I find that a common problem with rectangle lolita skirts because there is so much fabric. The best way to solve it is to use a seperate waistband that's much shorter than your skirt (I usually take my hip measurement and add 2-5 inches). Attach the skirt to the waistband the way you attached the ruffles to the skirt, then fold over the waistband and put the elastic inside.

Thank you. And your tutorial is one of the first things that came up when I googled for "lolita skirt tutorial," so I bet there are a number of people still using it. ^_^
